Banded Sandhill Crane

Postby LongTom » Tue Jan 03, 2012 10:27 pm

Decoyed in a group of crane and one looked like it had a bad leg so I dumped two rounds into it and what looked like a messed up leg turned out to be a radio transmitter. The bird was banded and fitted with a transmitter in Phillips Nebraska in February of 2000.

Awesome, I would love to shoot a crane some day let alone a banded one. Did they want you to send the transmitter back?

I doubt they will want it back, the thing is 11 years old plus the antenna is broke off. Battery life was only 18 months at best when the transmitter was attached in 2000 and from what I can tell they never received any feed back from this one.
Here is a link to the Crane Watch program that put the transmitters on although only the birds with functioning equipment show data.

Agreed, awesome, but, pleeeeaaaassssse don't tell me this is like your second hunt of your first waterfowl season. The dumb luck would kill some of these old timers that have hunted years and never smelled a band. :lol3: :lol3: :lol3:
