2019-2020 Meat thread

Postby micneador » Fri Nov 08, 2019 11:51 am

A little late but it's that time again for the season meat thread.
Had a little solo boot lip beat down yesterday evening. Killed 5 spoonies and a drake gadwall. Eagle picked up my 6th bird as I sailed him out of group I tripled on.Image

From Sunday, not the prettiest bag but shot a stud gadwall drake. Just grateful for a good solo hunt with my aging pup.

I've been seeing a bunch of them this year. Odd as I've never seen them in numbers till second split.

We saw quite the mix of species today. Mallards, gadwalls, wigeon, scaup, shovelers, gwt, and pintail from what we could for sure identify. TONS of ducks in the area, just wouldn't cooperate with our spot.

Gotta love farm pond greys. No circling around the spread, just dump in. Had a group of woodies flight line over me and I took a passing shot. This stud of a drake came tumbling down out of the sky. Not to shabby considering my scouting friday and my buddy's scouting yesterday turned up nilImageImage

Didn't see anywhere near the numbers we'd been seeing. The spot we hunt we're running traffic and we've been finding the birds very tough to convince to come to our spread. Was able to take a nice mallard and a what I think is a lesser?

Looks like a lesser to me.

Seems like the pattern now is you better be hunting a migration day in big water to have a spectacular hunt. At least in my areas. Both fronts in these consecutive weeks the birds are all over on the weather days and spread out the next or moved on.

Seem right to me. I think all the flooding depleted food sources and birds are hopping around quite a bit.

Killed these yesterday morning. I was hoping for a new push of ducks, didn't seem to be many new birds in my area. I'll try them again this weekend.

Waste of time. Hot as hell and saw zero ducks. Well I got to spend time with my dog so I can't say it was a waste of time but I definitely wasn't hunting.

I think you are right, I don't think hunting is a waste of time. Every time you go you get better, every time the dog goes they get better.
I do remember hunting one afternoon and didn't kill a duck. But found a good spot for the next morning and it turned out great.

I’ve hunted a couple of times this year had decent shoots both times. No pictures. One was a field hunt the other was a lake hunt. I did leave the lake had a little bit too early more bigger group started coming in and working the decoys when I went to go get the boat to pick up. However I think my dog may be out for the season which is depressing. He has some kind of a skin infection as well as a place on his foot that he has licked and bit raw. He’s on anabiotic’s and I’m changing out the dressing two or three times a day. However I don’t think he’s going to be ready to go the rest of the season. Had a similar tale last season, he had a puncture wound on his other foot.

Man that sucks, sorry to hear that. My dog ripped his ear open before a hunt once. Buddies assured me he was fine to keep hunting but it stressed me out the entire time. Injuries to dogs are the worst.

Yeah I agree. They always look worse than they really are too! Last year I was able to hunt with him at the end of the season cause the wound healed up. I guess we will see what happens this season.

Going duck hunting without my dog is kinda like going in public naked: its awkward, feels like you’re the only one, and sometimes just plain ugly!
