Hey 1776,
I’ve been lurking around here for a few years now. You’ve finally got me to log in. Thanks for sharing about your bismuth endeavors and thanks for your YouTube videos, I’ve seen a few of them.
How did you go about ordering from Boss? I emailed them last year about buying shot from them and never heard back. Dunno maybe my spam folder ate their reply.
I’ve ordered from Roto as well and was not impressed with the quality. I ordered their samples in 5 and 3. Then later ordered 10 pounds of 3.5. Overall most of the shot looks good and it shoots good but if I were to sort out all the garbage pieces I’d probably end up with ounces of slag looking pcs.
I started into bismuth with the hopes of making some killer 20 gauge loads for my son to kill a swan with. Now this last winter I picked up a Mag-10 and I can’t seem to see past the 2oz load options for it.
Anywho keep us updated on your progress. And I’ll keep an eye on your channel.

Wow nice shot.
So, are you casting bismuth now too?
I bought some sphero bismuth in B shot. Really like it’s shape and consistency compared to rotometals. I loaded up 50 or so from Tom Rosters manual. I ended up liking the fit of the 1 7/8 oz loads better than the 2 oz loads in REM hulls.
Unfortunately haven’t had any geese willing to let me “field test” the loads yet.

So last Saturday after several hours of birds passing over sky high, a pair dropped in from the side and gave my spread a look. I managed my first double of the season.

This was with the 2 ounce recipe from Tom Rosters manual and Sphero #B.
Neither bird was killed, just dropped. They both required an extra shot and one ended up taking several more along with a foot chase( I need a retriever in my life).
The one I had to chase down, I waited till it’s back was to me so I didn’t burger the breasts. It took two rounds in the back after being dropped and the breasts were not damaged badly.
So like you mentioned earlier I don’t know that I’m getting “devastating “ effects with this shot or shot/load combo. I only found one fractured pellet while butchering but did notice nearly all bones shattered badly.

Here’s my perspective on Rotometals vs Sphero. The rotometals shot is obviously smaller shot size so that might have some to do with it.

I bought this sample and was very let down.

After being burned by the 5 shot I talked myself into believing that bigger shot would look better.

I’m very impressed by the looks of this stuff. The second pic is a bb that fell out of a breast as I was preparing pastrami.

Sorry pics came out in a weird order. The Sphero shot is obviously the biggest.

Hey Bob,
I figure those two birds were taken around 45 and 50 yards which kinda sucks cause I missed a few over head shots that were probably the same or closer. I just can’t figure out the lead on high over heads.
No I haven’t patterned these loads. Last spring I patterned a couple steel BBB loads that I made and wasn’t impressed, something like 68-70% at 40 yards. I figured with the higher pellet count of the bismuth and smaller shot I’d have better luck. After the season I plan on doing some pattern testing.
How well do your 2 shot loads do for dispatch work? I was thinking about trying something like that but with maybe 4 or 5 shot. I’ve read about guys using cheap 6 or 7 shot upland shells for the task.
