I looked at the list of the 100 greatest Americans and was shocked. If you don't know what this is. Discovery channel is having people vote on who they think is the greatest American is.(hence the title of the show) Now they have most of the people you would expect. Ronald Reagan, Thomas Jefferson, Lincoln, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin. People like this obviously deserve to make the list. I like Tom Hanks and Mel Gibson. I see how they made the list, but who did more for America? An actor or a guy that helped draft the constitution.
That is not what shocked me. Michael Moore????? You have got to be kidding me! This fat anti-American slob is on the list. Ellen DeGeneres? How in the hairy blue hell did that happen? Ellen...made it...Ted Nugent didn't. I can see why Johnny Carson and Bob Hope made it, I can support that all the way. John Wayne, Chuck Yeager without a doubt. I guess that molesting little kids makes you a great American. So, Michael Jackson is on the list.
I guess that is more important than what Norman Swartzkoph (I know I murdered his name) did. (Not on the list) I will agree with putting Pat Tillman on the list.

I don't know how they came up with this list. I just can't see how you can compare Alexander Graham Bell and Albert Einstein with Dr. Phil and Madonna. (all four are on the list)
Madonna, by the way, I think lives in England. Well, I guess if this is all I have to complain about my life is going pretty good. Take a look at the list.... http://tv.channel.aol.com/greatestamerican I hope this link works. Who do you think is one of America's greatest people?

A lot of those leave me scratching my head. Tiger Woods? How about Joe Dimaggio, he actually went and fought for our country in WW2. Martha Stewart? Hell that are plenty of crooks that could have been on there I guess. Sure all of these people have done some amazing things, but I don't think that necessarily makes them a great American. Ted Nugent should definitely be on there. John Edwards? They might as well put Kerry and Jane Fonda on there. We live in such a GD liberal society! :pissed:

I think that Germany might quibble with us claiming Albert Einstein as our own. And I could have sworn Schwartzenegger was from Austria.

What about Alan Shepard, the first American man in space?
If you're gonna have actors on there, why not Humphrey Bogart?
And where the hell are Generals Lee and Grant? Not to mention Schwartzkopf, as well as Eisenhower and McArthur. And no matter how you feel about us bombing Hiroshima, Harry Truman has got to deserve to be on there 1,000 times more than Michael Moore.

This list is such B.S. I don't think there's even any point in arguing how much it sucks.

McArthur...great one. I agree with all of what you said. I am starting to think they put actors and directers in this list because they think we are too stupid to know our own history and will will not know who those people are. I am a Star Wars nerd and all that...but I think the defeat of Nazi Germany is just a little more important than George Lucus or Tiger Woods selling Buicks. I think the Wright Bros did just a little bit more for America than say Gov. Arnold did making Terminator movies. And as far as them putting Hillary Clinton on the list...give me a break. I would rather see Pee-Wee Herman.

This list is BS. I would only be repeating what has already been said here if I added anymore. I will say this, I will be emailing them my opinion of their list. Maybe, just maybe someone there will realize the ridiculous statements they are making with this "list".

i can't belive you guys are talking about this. i was thinking about this when i was in the gym watching the news. its a load of "[email protected]#$%"

i vote for the sniper and his buddy that roped down to help the guys in somolia when thier blackhawk went down and thousands of poeple with ak's were surounding the place.

or audie murfy

or the soldier who was killed in iraq who was awarded the medal of honor when his buddies were surrounded and he jumped up and manned the machine gun and reportedly killed 30-50 guys befor being shot in the head. he was the only one that was killed and was credited with saving everyone else.

abraham lincoln

any grunt in WWII should be WAY above some of those normal people!

boy, they need to rethink that. THE GREATEST AMERICAN... "dr phil" COME ON!!!

They might as well add the unibomber to the list. I was talking about this at work today and I got all fired up again. I was thinging about the few sports figures that are on the list. I don't like the Green Bay (fudge) Packers, but I respect how good Bret Frvea...Fvrae... Favra....ok...whatever. I would think that Dale Earnhardt SR. should be held in the same esteem. He built a dynasty starting with nothing. I would think that helping NASCAR become what it is today would have some merit.

You would know that some damn #3 fan would step in and ******* things up. Just kidding. You have got a point, but we have already established that that list was a crock of bull hockey.

The worst part about this list is that I understand the people selected were voted on by the American public. Any outsider would look at this list and automatically assume that Americans are a bunch of tree-hugging, liberal, airheaded, pedophile-endorsing hippies with no sense of history, culture, or legacy whatsoever. That's just lovely. No wonder Europeans look down on Americans. As a representative whole, we're freakin' idiots!

Hmmm? How can I agree and disagree with this at the same time? In all respect to your post... Europeans are a bunch of pompous, socialistic, cowardly, idiots that have forgotten how we keep saving their stupid asses. So who cares what they think. At the same time we might look like idiots because we can't control a liberal media that influences the ignorant American "idiots," and places the so called "pop-culture" icons above those that truly built this country into what it is today. Most of America knows what is going on. It is just that the minority has a bigger bullhorn (Hollywood) and thinks that they are speaking for the rest of us. They are so out of touch it is not funny.

I will place a large bet that those that did not deserve to make the list, were voted in by people that live in big cities. They out number those of us that just don't care about crap like this. We have more important things to think about.( I know I just contradicted myself because I started this post) (and I keep replying) But when I see things I just don't think represent the values of "normal" America...I want to spread the word. I am not trying to use this forum as a soap box...I just know that most of you have the same values as I. If we want to save out sport we have to save our culture and our traditions. We cannot let the minority win. But then again, how can they...we have more guns.

I think you are absolutely right... it's just unfortunate that the minority speaking is so skewed from reality. I don't want to get into a discussion about politics here, but I will say that it was somewhat gratifying that, despite Hollywood's best efforts to the contrary, Bush still got re-elected this past November. In that arena at least, they were not able to manipulate the thinking of the majority of the American voters. Still, this list... defies everything that most of us hold as our values.

That list is a bunch of horse sh%t. I can't believe half the names that were on it. How does a ************** like Ellen Degeneres make it on there? Does suddenly coming out of the closet make you a great American? If that's so, I work with a bunch of people who will some day become great Americans. HAD-- I agree with you. The sniper from Somalia was Randal Shughart from Newville, PA. Right down the road from my house. Listen to this BS. Some of the local vets wanted to name the new high school after him. The school board said no because they didn't want the students "Thinking less of the other Newville residents who served in the Armed Forces but aren't as recognizable". The local vets about shat their pants and all the dead veterans rolled over in their graves as the same time. Let's not forget people like Steven Ambrose. Mr. Ambrose was monumental in getting the Band of Brothers book he wrote made into a movie series. He also was one of the founders of the D-Day museum in New Orleans. How about David Hackworth? A decorated veteran of Korea and Vietnam who is now an embedded journalist in Iraq. He brings us the squared away version of what's really happening overseas and inside the military. How about less popular figures.... I mean people that not everyone is exposed to. How about The Nug. What he's done for hunting and conservation would take the NRA, DU, Delta Ducks, and all the other conservation groups hundreds of years to accomplish. By using his rock star status to drive home his message, he's accomplished way more then any flyer of conference ever could. Last but not least, every name of every person who's ever put on a uniform in the name of defending American freedom, at home and abroad, should have been very first on that list. It sounds stupid to say that they should all be first but it's the truth. By strapping on their boots and putting themselves in harms way, they have made themselves far better Americans then all the people on that assed up list. Let's not forget all the firemen, police officers, paramedics, and EMT's that are also out there everyday, putting their butts on the line to make America safer for all of us. I'll climb down off my soap box now. If you'll excuse me, I need to go wipe my *** with that list. God Bless America and all those who defend her on a daily basis!
