ANYONE OUT THERE USE A 20 GAUGE FOR DUCKS.

I RECENTLY BOUGHT A VERY NICE OVER/UNDER BIRD GUN THAT I PLAN ON TRYING. GIVE ME SOME POINTERS ON SHOT SIZE, ETC.........

Over decoys - especially early in the season (ME or NH) - I use 3" 4's or 2's - have taken Canadas too out of a pit when shots were very close - I use a Berreta I bought for partridge (which is the primary use) but enjoy a hunt for waterfowl every now-n-then.

The 'ticket' is to get birds in close for a sure kill.

I started out with a 20. But more ducks are out of range than you might think. Would be fine for hunting a tight hole.

I used to use a 20 ga.mag for just about everything, handy little shotgun.I wouldn't hunt duck with just steel shot in a 20 though, better off with at least bismuth or hevi-shot.

FOLLOW UP----

WENT, USED THE NEW 20, AND WAS VERY PLEASED. FOLDED SEVERAL MALLARDS, BLACK JACKS, AND WOODIES.

I BEGAN BY TAKING THE 20 AND MY 12. DIDN'T HAVE THE CONFIDENCE IN THE 20 YET, BUT I DO NOW. LEFT THE 12 AT HOME.

USED 3" # 6'S, AND SOME 3" # 2'S. THE 6'S WORKED REALLY WELL.

WHAT A JOY TO SHOOT.

This is my first year waterfowling. I was just givin a Bernardeli, One of the finest shotguns of Italy. Its a 20 guage and a great one at that, I've been using size 4 express shots and i've brought down 4 mallards, a widgeon, a teal and a pintail so far and one goose but the goose was brough down with luck alone, the field was full and we snuck up on them i only broke its wing and then several shots later i still had to cut its throat to put him down. size 4 i would suggest for teals or pintails, and so i've now started using size 2 for mallards and i can honnestly say its making a huge difference in my shots. Are there Double B's in 20 gauges, havent seen any yet?

I've killed a couple hundred ducks with my 20 gauge using 2 3/4" 4's over decoys and in flooded timber. Just have to wait for them to get in range and not be afraid to keep shooting if you hit with the first shot until they are down

As long as you are shooting at birds that are working your decoys than a 20g will be plenty. My brother dropped his first goose with a 20g.

I used to use a 20 ga for everything before this year when i got my 1200. I took long shots with it and dropped geese. Just know the gun and shoot well. All I ever used was #4 cuz i didnt like the pattern of the #2 try some different things out i guess.
