25 HP Johnson Question

516 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  swampbilly 1980
I'm running a 1997 25 HP Johnson. Lately it seems that when the weather dips down below 40 or so it has trouble starting up. I'm able to get it running by taking off the cover and putting my hand over the air intake. I guess this forces it to suck more gas and cranks right up. I'll let it run for 1-2 minutes and then kill it and put the cover back on. Restarts like a champ then but the initial start is where I am having issues. I'm thankful that I have a way to get it cranked even if it's a minor inconvenience but was curious if anyone had any suggestions on how to fix this. Also I might add that I never have to take the cover off to crank it on warmer days.

Va,..does that model year have the choke that you pull out and then it automatically retracts back in?

Swamp - My boat is a side console. 1648 Lowe....So my choke / primer is by pushing in the key while I turn it the key. Also has the idle leveler for cold starts.

Also, I hunt down around your way...do you happen to know anyone around there that services and works on Johnsons? I know of a few around Richmond but don't know anything about them other than they are expensive. After the season is over I'd like to take it somewhere to get a general service done and replace the water pump while they at it.
.....Yeah, you could try Pulleys' Marine in Mathews or Browns' Marine in Deltaville ..
