Outdoors Almanac: Resources bill clears major hurdle
From Staff Reports, News Services
May 9, 2004ONOT09

A bill that would allow citizens to decide whether to amend the state constitution to dedicate a portion of the state sales tax for natural resources and the arts cleared an important Senate committee last week.

The bill, which would dedicate 3/8ths of 1 percent of the sales tax, passed the Senate Finance Committee on Friday. An amendment asking voters whether to ban gay marriages, which had been attached to the bill, was removed, clearing the way for its passage.

It still has to be approved by another Senate committee and the full Senate and then would have to be reconciled with a different House bill.

Conservation and environmental groups have been pushing for the bill for several years but believe there is more support for the measure this year than in previous years.
