I am moving to Butte in January and will be doing some serious duck hunting next year after I am a resident. Oh yeah. I will have a computer so that makes 2 of us. Ironically I am moving up there to take a network admin position. How is waterfowl hunting over there anyway?

I hunt east of Billings on the Bighorn and its amazing late in the year. It depends on the weather during the early season

nope I have only hunted the bighorn. I was there 2 weeks ago and the were almost no ducks flying. I shot a few woodies, and geese but concentrated on pheasants. Numbers were ok .

Spent lots of time Hunting around Butte. Try The Jefferson Around Whitehall and Cardwell ( 30 miles east). There are numerous springs in the region that always seem to harbor ducks especially after the hard freeze. You're really gonna like the area if you love the outdoors.

Thanks for the insight. Hopefully I will find a duck hunter at my work when I get there and they can show me some spots. Moving there in January so I will miss the season this year but it will give me time to scout for next year.

Thats good to hear about the hunting in butte...I also just moved up here and we hoping to find some places to go...but I will go look around cardwell/whitehall...I was getting a little worried when I didnt see any migrations during the fall/winter overhead

I will be moving to Montana in the next few months in the Polson area and would like any general info on Duck/Geese and pheasant hunting in the area I can get, info like areas, access whether it is mostly public or private property what type of permission is needed, leases etc.... Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I'm new to this fourm and think it's great. I live by Billings. The duck hunting here was tough this year sometimes good sometimes rotten. Hunted both Yellowstone and Clarks fork river

I recently made a contact in Bozeman, seems we are both big into Boykin Spaniels. He does a lot of upland hunting, but has invited me for next year to go duck hunting. He was telling me about a refuge out that way, that about 7000 acres of it is huntable and usually holds approximately 25000 ducks of varied species. Would you have any idea what the refuge name is. I was wanting to look it up on the internet.

Boykin, since he is from Bozeman perhaps he is talking about Red Rocks NWR, which is near the Idaho / Montana border, within 2 hours (or so) of Bozeman.

If the person you met in bozeman who is into boykins is who I think it is, I would bet that he is talking about the Bodoin refuge up by Malta.

It is a long drive from Bozeman, but understand that it is good before it freezes. For late hunting, around x-mas, check out the Bighorn near Hardin. It is a tailwater, and never freezes. When the Yellowstone locks up, it rules.

Also, there are a number of spring creeks north of Belgrade and Bozeman along the east-gallatin that are truly amazing if you can get access. But from what I hear, the friendly farmers who will let you on with a knock on the door are pretty much gone...

The late hunting in MT is awesome if you can find open water.... Still plenty of ducks early, but they are more spread out. Good luck, boykins are the best.
