Hunting up north has been pretty good for me, it has been trying to freeze up around here but i dont think its gona so we wont be pushing the birds down.
Do u get many canada geese down there?

more geese to the west along the wabash river basin.....
come on turn the thermostat down and send them south.....
i made the comment in another thread that i believe the seasons are arriving later in the calendar year.....winter in dec...spring in april....summer in july......remember when it was cold during halloween....now you sweat to death following your kids around....
we get tons of birds in feb....Patoka FWA has pictures of the sky littered with birds....they estimated into the thousands.....but it was in feb....oh well
going tomorrow am...will post results

also the farmers lack of tilling the ground after harvest may have alot to do with waterfowl staying put........
went out twice this weekend and saw about 10 total waterfowl.....

Well over the weekend the small ponds had thin ice in the AM but today it was around 60. :thumbsdown:
They are saying by next tuesday are lows will be in the teens. Id like to do a little hunting in the south zone (about mid state) so id like some birds to move down.

Well, like normal, we have back-water and just a couple birds, if anything, down here in the Ohio River Zone. The birds we did have, have already been shot at and educated. Any sightings up north of moving birds? I believe next week there will be a steady push with the colder air moving in.
e'villeduck - i've been thinking about trying the patoka river bottoms where the river is now out....do you get up this way (Oakland City)...usually snakey point is pretty good...but the backwaters are out and gives the birds more options for water...

The Patoka River, near Oakland City, can be good if the birds are down. We call it the Oatsville Bottoms. It has become a popular spot so if you intend hunting it, get there early. You can put in on a ditch off a road and make your way to the river till you come to fields with backwater. If its up high enough, I've done well just walking in off the road. I know people were hunting it last week but not many birds were harvested. I was told it was dropping out all this week. I'm hunting the Wabash tomorrow. Its coming back up and cresting 14' on Saturday (so they say).

Nothing new in bloomington area either! the birds that are still here have their Phd's ! We need the snow and cold. Last bird count on Patoka wasn't worth hooking up the boat for. But you tell me... lol

I was just on another site where someone posted that the lakes are still open in MN and are covered up with ducks. Until they get a hard freeze or covered up with snow they won't be down. We got the water now to stop them from migrating through, just need the cold and snow up north. :thumbsdown:
here lies the problem.....
i want cold weather to send the ducks south....
however if it turns cold...we get really busy at the business that i own...a propane company....
hmmmmmm at least i have a cell phone where they can get in touch with me....as long as it gets cold before season ends....
this slow and windy time is giving me time to finish my boat blind....

I may take my survey Sunday via the Poke Boat. Camera or Benelli ? The camera may be more worthwhile according to your exchanges.
There are 400 + or - Canadas as usual in the coal mine refuges. 100 ducks of a good varietyand one pie-billed grebe. All biding their time well below Oatsville Bottoms and the growing refuge that geese visit far less than mine property.
An 18 hole golf course in the vacinity of Snakey Point would make the spot more attractive for grass loving Canadas. Maybe someday they'll manage it to attract geese. :umm:

14' is in Mackey Bend. They are running people out though. Shot 3 geese (1 band!!), mallards, and pintails. Saw lots of new and high birds moving this weekend. Water should continue to be around all this week.
and the 100 ducks of good variety are hiding where?????
i haven't been out for a week..and was dismal when i did go out....went out one afternoon and saw 0/zero/nada flying....hunkered down at home and was able to finish my boat blind.....avery has been out of them for a while(i was going to order one) so i fabricated on out of 3/4 emt and blind material...didn't turn out too bad...may just stick with this for when the wind is blowing canoes catch hell when the wind blows over 7mph
thought about floating the canoe out in oatsville bottoms south of the mine and north of the river for some field hunting....saw some guys out over there two weeks ago
also thought about taking the canoe out on the old part of the patoka river east of SR57 when the water raises a little more...

surf ox,.........they were there as of last week. Saw few if any this evening. I'm a late arrival for my mine refuge survey because 919 goes 470 miles before I get it,....... lately.

I never see much hunter activity where you mention along 57's old channel for some reason. Maybe they know something we don't. Now that the woodies have left Dodge for Pine Bluff.

The water is owned by the state and it's people if it moves via river or stream. Lakes qualify if on state property. A judge would rule in favor of the landowner no doubt. My thoughts? Go anyway and let God sort it all out.
They have tried this at Oatsville for the last four or five years. The blinds are steel in that area for good reason.

I live in northwest Indiana. My hunting companions and I shot alot of geese this year. We were pass shooting in a flyway between night resting grounds and morning feeding area. We were mainly after divers at the beginning but when we saw the geese flying the same pattern everyday, we set up for them and started whacking them.

Back-water is freezing up where theres not much current. Going out Friday to find some open water.
Surf_ox, Depending on the kind of boat you have, the BeaverTail is the way to go. They're as sweet as a fat mallard. Is Oatsville still out? Do you hunt around PSI any? If so, hunting any good on the Wabash there?

i was on the oatsville road twice today but never got over by the coal mine patoka river way to see if the H2O was still out...
i found plans for a boat blind on http://pages.pathwaynet.com/~bketner/boatblind.htm
simple but real sturdy design....compared to some of the even simpler pvc brand duck blinds....in my book any duck blind is better than none...
what is the mackey bend....i moved out here 6 years ago but have never heard that term for a location....
i have however picked up on many location names through my business...Propane One...its amazing the number of nickname areas around southern indiana

It's not to worry. Geese float in a current too! Coal tailings won't hurt them or us if we eat one that's been loafing there for months. They would not stay on tainted water. Drinking water with a little magnatite mixed in makes the feathers on their chests sprout hair. :laughing:
Waterfowl get a stigma about where they loaf sometimes. Waterfowl are seen on pig farm slurry pits too.
You never know where that last limit of ducks came from. :umm:
