Wondering if we have any Cabelas outfitters here........in Maine they are openning a store and I have been offered a couple of positions, one pt "on the floor" in waterfowling, the other is ft as gun administrator 'behind the scenes'. I am astounded by the pay scales offered and wanted to know what pay levels are out there at other locations. I was told the floor job was $9/hour which is 'poverty' here in Maine as far as I'm concerned! :help:

I really want to work at Cabelas but for not for 'peanuts' giving up ALOT of income.

Even though it is THE premiere retailer for outdoor activities, Cabela's is just a retailer. The floor position there isn't really any different from the same position at Dick's or K-Mart in reality.

I worked for Cabela's In MN for over 2 years. If you like busting your @*$ from start to finish with very limited breaks including lunch then ya the floor is the place for you. That typically only happens during the hunting season and on weekends. If you are not a "people person take the gun job it will probably pay more and be less stressfull. If you havent ever worked retail you might be suprised at how many people are real pricks even though they can see you are working as fast and as hard as possable if you dont help them right away the turn into pricks so keep that in mind. Other wise working for Cabelas is fun and you do learn alot about hunting.
P.S. Also your pay checks will be small because the discount is good and you will be spending most your pay check at the store.

I herya on the speding all the $ at the store.....heck, I already spend alot with them.

I think the administrator job is more my 'thing' only because I am one of those analytical types....and when not cranking on the gun inventories I can wander the floor and help out.

I guess my issue is that, the administrator job is alot of stress....they have a corporate accuracy rate of .005%....and then there are the ATF audits....so the pay is still a huge cut for me and probably not worth it overall. But not just a cut, it is a job that is way underpaid at less than $30k a year with such a demand for accuracy. Just my opinion of course.

that's not the bottom - it's welfare level.......I can take the job and get food stamps at that rate....I made more money thirty years ago the day after I left college!
Yea but gas was $.50 a gallon too. I make $31 a hour now and some weeks it doesn't seem like enough

the pt sounds good....untill ya hear the time required....they want me there four nights a week (6-10) and then three of four weekends a month

so.....no time to even mow the lawn let alone see the family

and the 'discount' is like 10 or 20 percent ....big deal!

if you want a part time job try gander mountain. i worked there five years and it was great. you still get crappy pay but a 20% discount and 3 employee shopping days at 30% off make it worth it. not to mention every one you work with likes the same things you do. I learned sooo much in my five years, it's like going to hunting/fishing college. and as far as scheduling i worked 2 nights a week and every other weekend and i could usually request time off for hunting or fishing.

Then dont do it. If its that bad look somewhere else. Find another job and use your cabelas card to get the discounts your looking for.

Part time just for the discounts?
Worked there for two years...PT. Here's how the discounts worked when I was there...5% on new guns...10-15% on used. Big discounts 30-40% on any shoes, boots, clothes with "Cabelas" on them. They had an employees Bargain Cave Christmas sale...50% off the lowest marked price. I bought $1300 worth for $500.

But, it's corporate...ruthless at times. I had a great manager...he took care of me schedule wise and good deals on equipment. I love talking dogs so I pretty much stayed in that area. The biggest downer was working with college kids who just didn't give a crap...wouldn't show up for work...would BS customers, etc. You know the type.

When they're paying so low...which they do at all positions below Dept Mgrs...you can expect poor employees...

A Cabela's near me that opened in September 2007, just laid off 40 full-time employees. No mention in news paper of what happened with part-timers.

I think I saw something about that, not so much the layoffs but that Cabela's isn't hitting the local employment targets to trigger tax breaks at some of the stores.

Since I am not looking for a job.......spent almost 30 years as an underwriter and work as Town Clerk in my town (kinduv an early retirement job).....I wanted to work for Cabelas and I really did not even consider the discount.....I have more than enough 'stuff' already and $25 off a pr of waders is not worth considering nor would a few boxes of ammo.....that's right, I wanted to be part of Cabelas.....unfortunately for Cabelas I am worth alot more than an annual gross under $23k.....especially when you consider the responsibility and detailed excellence when tracking firearms and their paperwork.

I really am surprised and somewhat disturbed by what I found out. Cabelas is supposed to be, and I always believed to be, the premier outdoors outfitter. Maybe for those of us who know what we want, but if they are hiring at such low earnings when a WalMart down the street is hiring greeters for $10.50 and floor at $12.35.........and we all know in general the quality of expertise a floor person at WalMart has....so basically Cabelas is saying they will take anyone.....and they offer no flexibility on hours. I even offered to work a couple nights a week and on Sundays but they want no less than 32 hrs on as part-time basis. That does not impress me although I can see this as a super way to earn a few dollars after full retirement and I might keep that option open in a few years.

Thanks to those offering input!

I worked for Bass Pro Shops for 2+ years. Pay was crap but I was young. Honestly it was the most fun I could of ever had with a job! I worked in the fishing dept. but quickly moved to promotions doing radio shows, in store demos and being sponsored to fish in tournaments. Also met some of the "Outdoor Celebrities" as well as regular celebs. Wish I would of never left but the pay just got to be to little as I grew.

I really wish I could of afforded to stay.

Oh, and the discounts! Man I bought a lot of stuff while working their!
