I see that alot of you guys ask about Australia which has quite an array of duck spieces.I would suggest you type into your search engines" Duck shooting Australia".Will you find hunting tips, guides , spieces identification or hunting chat sites? The simple answer is No. What you will see is something like "SPCA" or "coilition against Duck Shooting" or "Hunting now banned in most states."Australians also have ridiculous gun laws but thats another story.
The sad truth is that most people in the western world see duck shooting as wrong and activists see hunters as red neck cowards who mame and torture birds in the name of sport.
The following happened in the huge state of Queensland:
The SPCA (You guys have one too) fundraising officer Kerry Cutting said thousands of native ducks and quails were injured, maimed or killed in the name of the recreational sport each year.
She said this year Environment Minister Desley Boyle had cancelled the season because of a drop in bird numbers caused by the drought.
"But it wasn't really a judgment based on the welfare or cruelty aspect and that's really what we want to get through," she said.
Speaking at a rally in Brisbane city's King George Square, Ms Cutting said the RSPCA had joined forces with Birds Queensland, the Queensland Conservation Council, Animal Liberation Queensland and the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland to ensure the season never reopened.
Ms Cutting said more than the legally sanctioned ducks and quails ended up in the firing line during the hunting season.
"Even experienced bird watchers find it difficult to tell the differences between species in the air - so often swans end up getting shot," she said.
"A lot of them don't die instantly, it's pretty agonising - they literally fall to the ground maimed."
Ms Cutting said the lead shot used to hit the birds usually then ended up being ingested by other animals - leading to lead poisoning and, in some cases, death.
She said Queensland was one of the only Australian states that still allowed the cruel and archaic spot.
"Because of the inherent cruelty, duck shooting has never been allowed in the ACT and it's banned in Western Australia and New South Wales," she said.
"At the moment, really Queensland and Victoria are the main states who have a problem with it."
Ms Cutting said although there were only 400 registered duck shooters in Queensland, last year almost 11,000 ducks and 3,000 quails were shot.
Birds Queensland vice president Mike West said the rally was an expression of outrage from people sick of seeing animals hurt needlessly.
I must admit personally there are hunters out there who give the rest of us a bad name, shooting at ducks well over 50 meters ,not abiding by regulations and mocking people against duck hunting with violence.
The PETA and other groups are listened to , do have an impact and should be treated seriously!
Its the international people using this site (me!!!) who say we need to give ourselves a better image ,not to condone the actions of idiots and take a woman a kid or a mate hunting!!!!!!!!
Australian duckhunters were outnumbered and the more people we have shooting and the better our image, the longer we can enjoy our tradition, our well managed enviroment ,our sport and reap the health benifits of game meat! :thumbsup:
