for my lab, I used water balloons......
you can fill them about the size of a lemon, then when
there barking you walk outside and throw it at there feet.
follow that up with the command quite. the balloon
scares them without any pain... after a week of this, you can
walk outside and raise your hand and say quite, they
think the balloon is coming and will stop. the next week you
need only to say the command quite and it will work......
this is even wife/kid safe too, letting them in on it....

heres another puppy tip.....
while there outside peeing or craping, use the word
"do you business" and keep saying it while there going.
as they get older and you want to go somewhere, you say
"do you business", and they can go and be ready to ride in the car...
that way they don't have to hold it.....or ask you to pull over...lol

I would like to see you try the water balloon trick with my lab. As soon as you closed the door, he would look at you like, oh yea! And Bark. The only thing that stops him from barking, is the bark collar with fresh batteries.

My wife would kill me if I threw a water baloon at her and told her to shut up. Might work on the kids though.

I have never used one at less than 4 to 5 months. Not sure how old your pup is. Have you worked on holding the muzzle and saying no or a quiet command? You have to be careful and sometimes just waiting out the barking is better than giving it attention because the dog ends up training you. A lot of times it gets worse before it gets better. I would stay away from throwing things at a pup, you never know what that can do to a dog. If you go with a collar, I recommend either the Tritronics or Dogtra. Some of the others you will just be wasting your money.

I second that notion.

 I started using mine when she was pretty young. It has a 5 step shock. 1st shock verylight up to 5th strong. Once the dog stops barking after any of the shocks it resets itself. But like anyone will tell you. These are hunting dogs and pretty smart. Mine is 5 now and will bark only to come in the house if no collor is on. Once the collar is on she wont bark until she moves it to the side of her neck so it wont shock her. SO she trained me, I just let her in. Another female in my house who manipulates me, whats new!! Good luck!

It should be fine, they usually beep first before they shock. It is better to train them now, then you might not need the collar later.

let me clarify on the balloon thing,
you don't throw it at the dog......lol
you throw it at the ground near him and the
splash is what confuses them and shuts them up....

I didn't think this up either, my trainer told me to do it...
and he has 2 state champion field trials dogs and trains
many others.....
I too wouldn't throw it at them, and agree that might do harm...

just wanted to set the record straight.......
