my buddy is graduating from college in may and im looking to get him a layout blind...and i need one myself. I was wondering what the best layout blind out there was and why its so great...the only thing that im really concerned about is length...Im 6'6" which is just tall enough for stuff to not fit...but overall im just looking for the most comfortable, easiest to assemble and carry...i've tried a few out in the store but i would like some actual field tested input...

I have an Interceptor and a Blanket Blind. I'm not quite 6 ft. and I stick out of the blanket. The Interceptor would probably be long enough for you. I carry my stuff in-dekes, blind, etc.- and have found the Interceptor is bulky and somewhat awkward to carry after brushing it out. My hunting buddy has a Power Hunter and he likes it, but it has it's issues, too, with gear stowage.

I own X-landers and Finishers and perfer the Finishers. Finishers are fairly roomy and still retain a low profile. I am 6-2+ and 250 lbs, my son is 6-4 - 245 and the Finisher fit us both pretty well. The X-landers are a little cramped and the "floppy" doors suck in windy conditions. The X-landers work for long walk-in silo hunts because of their backpack style configuration, but that's the only thing I like about them versus the Finishers.

I am also 6' 3" and about 225 with gear on. The 2007 FA Eliminator S.U.B. is a great fit for me and folds down to roughly 2' x 3'. The FA Eliminator also comes in a big version which is made for bigger guys but it won't fold down for transport...has to be transported flat.

Just ordered one, Johnch. Hope I can get the credit card statement from the mail box before the wife does.
Man that is so me above. I just got a FA SUB (2006 model) and its really nice. Anyone now how its supposed to fold down to the frame size for packing? I can pull out all the pins and collapse to approximate size - do I tuck in the footbed or flip over? How is is supposed to stay all together w/o opening and dumping everything out. I know there's a shoulder strap. just wondering if anyone has this experience. Note: Mine is the older SUB model. The new ones supposedly fold in half of what I get mine into.

The UPS man brought mine to me yesterday afternoon...had it delivered to the office, as I do most of my huntin' stuff.

Got home last night, took the trash to the street, fiddled in the garage for a minute, and then went to the truck to get the box out and hide it in the garage. Well, just as I'm starting to walk up the driveway into the garage, out pops the wife from inside. I do a quick 180 and head back to the truck and pretend I'm looking for something. I was caught! After a couple rounds of questions...how much, why more hunting crap, etc...the dust settled and things quieted down. I even set it up in the den for her to "admire".

Now, for the life of me, I could not get the thing to fold back down to the size it was when I took it out of the box. Any ideas?

caglatz, the 2006 model won't fold down as small as the 2007 model. From what I remember from looking at a 2006 model, it basically folded in half and there was an elastic cord on the stubble straps behind the head rest to hook on the foot end to keep it together. There was a sling for carrying it but I don't think it held anything together.

Willie, folding the 2007 model takes a bit of practice. You basically have to reverse the order of attaching the parts when you set it up. Remove the gun rest and fold the front frame down. Then fold the back frame down. Pull both the bottom frame and both door frames apart. Then the key is to pull the back half of each of the door frames back until they are touching the back of the blind on either side of the headrest. That way the seperations between the 2 pieces of each of the door frames and the 2 pieces of the bottom frame will line up so that you can fold the blind. Just watch that the shock cords don't pull the frames back together and that the seperations are lined up.

Having to do ALL OF THAT ^ automatically disqualifies a blind from being called 'the best' in my book. lol

This is why I use Ground Force blinds. Takes me all of 15 seconds to fold it up and have it on my back. Just over that to set it up. And it's lower profile than an S.U.B. When my father and I carry our layouts to one of our favorite spots he makes me carry his (S.U.B.) and he carries mine. When I come out and he's already got mine on his back, I usually just laugh, but his is s much more of a pain in the a** to carry.

Thanks for the advice - exactly what I needed. Im a larger guy and the SUB fits me really well. I can suffer with the carrying aspect of it. I knew it wouldn't collapse as much as the newer model. I'll look for the elastic by the headrest.

As far as a wife story, a buddy of mine bought this sweet climbing treestand made by Summit. He had to try it out so when his wife left he went and got it and set it up on the front lawn. Wel - you guessed right - here he is climbing down from the tree in the front yard and his wife pulls into the driveway !

Well I was about to order the S.U.B, and after seeing that it is a pain in the butt to fold up im leaning towards the ground force. I have the pro guide that I bought last summer, didnt read up on them and then relized they only fold flat and not in half or thirds.
