Last fall I went on a 2 month long bird hunting trip that covered 7 states. Obviously one objective was to kill ducks and geese, but the other was to look at different states to see where we might go if we escaped the People's Republic of Kalifornia. After I got back we made a list of pros and cons and added them all up. In the long run South Dakota had far more pros than cons. In May we cam out and got our driver's licenses, registered vehicles, registered to vote, etc. This week I flew back out to Sioux Falls (still working a summer job in dispatch here right now) and paid for 3 acres of land we bought. This spring we'll start building a shop and a house. Once the structure shell is up I'll do the rest with the objective of having it fully paid for when the last nail is pounded into place. Probably do some traveling this winter/spring before getting down to the work aspect of things as far as building goes. Sat on my buddy's porch drinking coffee on Thursday and heard song birds, doves and geese...but no people noise. None. Out on the road I only saw 1 car and 2 tractors go by. Awesome. We'll only be 3 1/2 hours from my wife's mom in Minnesota, so after 35 years of marriage my wife will be able to see her mom whenever she wants. She's really looking forward, and we're both looking forward to getting out of this moronic state.
As for us, I'm a retired fireman, love to hunt and fish and carve decoys. Wife is an outstanding beautician who has worked from home for many years. We both play bluegrass music. I play the mandolin, guitar and some banjo, and she is an excellent stand up bass player. She also loves to quilt, fish and garden. In addition to that she might as well be Tim the Tool Man's twin. Her nickname at home is Mrs. Goodwrench. She got to disc a field a little last month and was in 7th heaven. We have three daughters and 4 grandkids. My middle daughter has hunted with me for 17 years and has no issue slogging through the water at 0400, nor does she mind processing her own birds.
Looking forward to settling in and building in the spring.
