Went hunting for my first time(50 yrs.old) this month, pheasant, droped one on my first shot. Going duck hunting this upcoming weekend.Besides all the expense of waders, jacket, gloves, ect. wondering if I should drop money on camo gun or will my 870 wingmaster, (2.75 only) do for this first trip.I'm addicted, been anadrinelin junkie all my life rock&ice climbing, skiing,ww kayaking, and hitting that pheasant was just as much a rush.
thanks michael

stick with your wingmaster for sure, as long as it isnt full choked.

i have a camo BPS and i can tell you it makes no difference, the best thing about it is the finish protects the metal. im trading it in for a mossberg 835 or 535 though, synthetic stock and matte finish.

yes!, do not have the full choke in there, when my buddy got a new gun, i told him to make sure he switched to the modified and what not...he didnt :fingerpt: , shot steel shot through it for about a year, and now guess what? his choke is stuck in there, haha he has to take it to a gun shop or something to get it out, it was pretty bad.

it really depends. if you want to also get into goose hunting (which is alot of fun) i would say to start looking for a used or new gun with a 3" or 3 1/2" chamber. i would buy another 870 if it was me. i have one with a synthetic stock and 3" chamber and it drops everything. as far as camo goes, it's totaly up to you. i dont have camo just due to the cost and it tends to wear off. if i do camo my gun it will be spray paint. hope this helps. and im glad you enjoy wingshooting so much! happy hunting

Don't dump the money on the gun yet. Do you know what type of ducks you are going to be seeing the most of? I agree that make sure you have a mod choke in. Get some 2.75" #3 rounds and see if this is something you are going to be into for years to come. If you have a blast but where fluffing up ducks that were flying away at 30 yards out then I would say invest in a gun that can take a larger shell. I just know that friends of mine have seen how much I love fly fishing and go out and spend a grand on gear to get started but get so fed up learning to cast that they now have a grand worth of gear just setting in a bag in their basement.

yes. i forgot to add to not get a gun right away. and i know what you mean about fly fishing. i used my dads old rod and taught myself, that took alot of practice, but people say my casts look close to perfect. i kinda ditched fly fishing and just tied flies and such

Fly tying and duck hunting go hand 'n hand with me haha. People love me because I will clean all their ducks if I can keep the feathers. SilverBullet, instead of painting your gun it may be better to buy one of those shrink wrap kits for $10. I'm thinking about picking one of those up for my 410 thats in rough shape. It was a cheap gun to begin with but I loaned it to my brother and he never took care of it once in the 5 years he had it so it started to rust. I think I might just shrink wrap it now in camo and have the meanest looking rabbit gun around haha.

The only thing I'll add to the above replies is to ask if your 870 has choke tubes or a fixed barrel. I have an older Wingmaster 2 3/4" chamber, with a fixed Full choke barrel. If this sounds like your gun, just go hunting and don't worry about choke issues. You'll have plenty of time for that when you start missing birds.

Welcome to the sport

Thanks for the replies guys. went out yesterday didn't even get a shot,no birds. But I enjoyed it anyway going out and busting Ice,setting out the spread and waiting.I would have waited longer, only 9am,but my partner said if no birds by then wouldn't be any later. Weather changed 2hrs later and i saw many groups of ducks flying. I really can't wait to go again. I'll be buying some decoys and learning to call so I can go by myself if need be.

i would consider that, but you have to get all the moisture out, my friend did it and he spent more time dealing with rust afterwards lol. im pretty set on painting as this is a strict hunting gun, and thats what i bought it for.
