Thank you, yes I have trained 2 labs with smart works some people are telling me chessies train different so far haven't seen much of a difference the chessie is def softer but calmer in a good way will see just started to formalize his ob then on to hold and ff he has a great temperament wondering if it will change as he matures 🤷🏼‍♂️

If Rick Hall doesn't chime in PM him.
It's always, always, always more about the individual breeding than breed. That said, the most authoritative word I've seen on the training Labs vs Chessies subject coming from a Carr based, US mainstream training background like Grahm came from Mitch Patterson, who probably had a hand of some sort in the development of more Dual, FC and AFC Chesapeakes, as well as a number of FC and AFC Labs, than anyone I'm aware of. And his observation boiled down to the balance between building on successes or with corrections, needed to be more heavily weighted toward the former for Chesapeakes than with Labs. (The single exception he noted being Dual CH AFC Rudy of Nordais, who apparently was more Lab-like in that regard.)

That's about the best I can do coming from your familiar Smart Works perspective. (A serious amateur pointing dog mentor, George Bird Evans, started me down a very different, I believe easier on all involved, training path 11 of my 12 gundogs to date ago.)

Well my pup is from a frozen straw of Rudy and MH dam so the line is there my lab just did everything rite from the rip, I agree building on success for all dogs in training I guess my only concern is using too much pressure and having him shut down but I am going slow his coat is a lot thicker then any lab Ive had I could see the drive and potential is there when he wants to do something he is better then if I force him to do it thanks for the reply

I’m on my 3rd Chessie and have used Smartworks for all three. The first two I trained and ran in HRC hunt test and also hunted ducks, goose and pheasants with them. My current boy is an awesome hunter and is running AKC Master this summer after getting his HRC finished title last year. From watching my buddies in my HRC club train their labs, my chessie’s have all been a little different. Training is more of a collaboration, working together, cant use pressure like with a lab-they don’t respond well, don’t do a lot of repetition-they get bored so change things up periodically to keep it interesting. Hunting wise they have been machines and are great companion. Hit me up if you want to chat.
