my dog just won't pick up the dummys the right way. Any fail-safe ways to keep my dog from cigaring bumpers? I would say 80% of the times he does it. I have heard using a dowl with 2x4's on the end so that he learns to pick up in the middle. We have been doing hold for about 10 sessions or so, he's got a good mouth, does it fine while doing obedience, but once I throw a fun bumper, he goes to hell. Any tips appreciated, I have also heard barb wire on the ends, but not sure about that

right now, I make him come back, tell him "no", move it to the right spot, say hold, then praise... seems ineffective....

thanks

most every dog I have FF picks them up like a cigar for a while I think they feel like if they have more of it in there mouth at first thay will not drop it.

How old is the dog ? I wouldnt be to worried about it will prob clean it self up on its own. Most do

a year and a half old, hes been forced once, i didn't know what i was doing, now I do, so i started over, we did basic, went well, now teaching hold, it's going good until he goes for the bumpers.. then it's sloppy

we are about 10 sessions in i'd guess

if it matters, I think i've only seen a handfull of retrieves the right way

well I dont throw any marks for a dog while Im FF him the only thing he gets is bummpers he is forced on intill I have him force out to 100 yards or more . Are you throwing marks while FF this dog you could undermine your self.

Try glueing some PVC reducers to the end of your bumpers like this. I can't tell you if it cures the habit but atleast you know its not making the habit any worse. My dog did the same thing but he never did it with birds. A professional trainer can cure the issue with FF.

update tonight, he did really well. I gave one last session of just telling him no, moveit, then GOOD BOY, HOLD, GOOD

this pretty much didn't work, for the last week. Then I threw one in the water again. He came back with it just right, and I just celebrated for him, and praised him, and said, GOOD HOLD GOOD, and just got excited... from there I think he had one retrieve that was slopy, which I told him, no, hold, good, hold

seems he might understand what i'm asking of him finally?

you dont say how old he is?my chessie bitch would bring back any fashion when she was younger (shes 8month now)which never bothered me in the slightest, its the real thing that your dogs for, once hes on game proper holding will become second nature for him, dont panic about which end of the dummy hes holding just so long as he brings it back to you!
ps the guy that recommended using BARBED WIRE needs a good kick in the nuts big time,i cant believe i read that
