Clear coat makes them look great for a while.

The sun is your worst problem with clear coat.

The clear coats I have used, and more than one brand turn dull and yellow after being in the sun.

Ultraviolet rays break it down.

I have also had it start to peel.

Maybe they have a new product out I am not aware of.

We take linseed oil and cut 50% with kerosene and wipe the decoys down.

This gives them a nice light sheen and brings the colors out.

Our club has been doing this for 70 years.

I use Krylon Flat spray, available at Walmart.(not the Matte, but Flat)

I apply 2 or 3 light coats (drying in between) to all or part of my dekes, sometimes just the heads as these take the most abuse, expecially with corks. I find that although it adds a touch of shine, the benefits outweigh the bad aspects. It protects the paint and keeps white areas clean without getting lots of black marks and rubs from the other birds.
I have not yet experienced any problems with yellowing or peeling, but I've only used it for a couple of years.

Charlie,
What type of decoy do you use this on: plastic, wood, cork, foamers? I have plastic ones now and wanted to know if this would work. Thanks.

I also use the clear FLAT.........just one 'caution', it is not a cure for keeping the paint perfect......you will get scuffs and mars, just not as much especially in the early use stage......I have not had an issue with yellowing, but that may be because I have my shop in the basement and I keep new/refurbished blocks there for a few weeks of curing. IMO it is worth the minimal cost but not vital. I use it on dark cork, dust and burlaps......latex/acrylic paints.
