i read a article a while back(i cant find it now)about making a small portable heater out of a coffe can? if i remember right it said to put a roll of toilet paper in a coffe can(1 lb can worked best it said)and you pour in a whole bottle of rubbing alchohol at least 70% pure or it wouldnt burn, and let the paper soak up the alchohol for a while and light it up.the article said it would burn for several hours and put off good heat. my question is has anyone tried one of these, and do you poke a hole anywhere in the can to draw air? thx for any replies

I have used the TP/alcohol warmer before. Very handy.

Another version: Take a large coffee can, cut a couple "mouse hole" notches on the open end, and simply place it over a can of sterno.

How do you make a "hobo" stove?
Take a bottle/can opener, and put a bunch of holes around the side of the can near the bottom (your cooking surface), then you cut away a piece about two inces high by three or four inches wide at the top end (open end) of the can. You build a real small fire out of small sticks etc and put the can over the top. You can then add extra wood through the door you made, and the vents allow the smoke to escape. We've cooked whole meals with very little wood on these. It sounds strange, but it's amazing how well they work.

Here's a link I found.

Sounds like a good idea, but heres a question,

Where do you put one of these things in a layout blind so that its in a spot where its not going to light the back of the seat on fire(like if you place it behind you were most of the room is) or so its in a place where your not going to move your arm over it and light you on fire?(like if you had it at your side)
