I am really wanting to get into shooting coyotes here in Idaho. I used to go out with a couple friends back home in Illinois and they taught me to call and all that. One of the guys grandfather always took the ones we shot and skinned them out and did whatever with them. I was just wondering what you guys do with them after you shoot them. Is there somewhere or someone around here that takes them, or buys the pelts?

With the bad economy your lucky if you can even sell a good coyote skin. I heard that top dollar was $9 last year and its worse this year. Your getting out of the prime season anyways as they will start rubbing soon so I would just leave them where you drop them. A cat is still worth skinning but you can only shoot them for a few more weeks.

I am probably going to wait until fall to try and shoot a couple so I can get some good pelts. I want to do something with them, I am not one to shoot something and just let it lay and go to waste, even if it is a no good yote.

So with stating that, are you going to eat it as well? If not you are wasting! Nothing, and I mean nothing in the wild goes to waste. Something will eat that dead 'yote and be stoked to find it and not have to kill it itself. I do understand the fact that you take pride in eating all that you kill and I respect that. But do not fool yourself that by killing a predator like a 'yote and leaving it, is wasting. I have killed many a 'yote and wanted to have a pelt, the only problem is that the ones I really like, stunk so bad I could not go near them without wanting to vomit.

Oh yeah, your avatar is awesome!

Good point. No way I am going to eat them. It was just always beaten into me since I was a kid that you shouldn't kill something that you don't intend to do something with whether its eat it or kill it for the pelt or whatever. Its kinda hard to get past that way of thinking. I guess it wouldn't be a waste to consider it shooting practice to better ensure a good clean kill on a deer or elk next season.

As for the avatar, that homeless guy gets +100 cool points for creativity. Hands down, coolest homeless guy ever.

You can look at it this way. The rest of the county is fighting mange and there are tons of coyotes dying terrible deaths. If we help thin the populations you are allowing our coyotes to stay healthy. Also your helping other populations by thinning the predators. One major predator we are fighting down here are the raccoons they have boomed over the last couple year and are really taking a toll on our waterfowl.

Your not thinking big enough.

How about the flies, and beatles that feed on it then are eaten buy birds, lizards, frogs, etc?

How about the fur that is gathered by mice and birds for nests.

Or again the manage, rabies, etc that won't be passed along.

The rabbits, antelope, calves and upland game that will survive now.

There is a ton that gain when a coyote dies.

It just goes back to the person looking at it whether the glass is half full or half empty.

LOL I know, as a biologist i use the circle of life argument all the time. The nutrients do get recycled. I always skin them. Even when the market is low, I can get them tanned ans sell for $50. They actually did very well at the ID furr sale. good dogs averaged almost $30.

Realistically you dont do anything by removing a few yotes. Studies have shown that you need to remove over 70% of the population for several years before any reduction is noted. It makes you feel good though.

Are you guys "Sportsmen" or just "Fanatical Killers" that give anti-hunters a purpose?
Think about it.

I take pride in being a Sportsman.
Sportsman and gentleman first. Cold blooded predator killer assasin second. I won't kill foxes though, unless they are sick with mange. We have A problem with mange here in the Wood River Valley especially in foxes and coyotes. Also I have noticed quite A few Raccoon carcasses on the highway lately. I guess you would rather have them die A horrible slow drawn out death or get squished by some truck tires. I pay for A hunting liscense which guarantees my right to hunt what is legal sir. Go back to your little world. This is A hunting website, with hunters as members. On the otherhand if you want A fight you are in the right place.

They had trouble killing 70% with the old 1040 poison. Recreational hunting and trapping wont ever do it.
