Snow Branch Freezing Pattern Tints and shades

Sat in the snow last weekend and listened to them gobbling. Less than a month to wait.

The earliest turkey writer I can remember, Roger Latham, advocated taking them on the rise, like other upland game. But the bastages too seldom flush.

Knothead and I were hunting a small farm with a few pheasant on it. Were in a thick marsh grass area and he was working a bird. Imagine both of our surprise when he put up 3 Turkeys. 😂 Not sure whose eyes got bigger. Wasn't Turkey season and I didn't have a permit. Woulda been a cool pic and story.

Last time the Brittany and I hunted grouse in Ohio, the turkeys had gotten so thick in the Wayne that one ought to be able to kill them with a short stick.

Its about preserving the meat and making a clean kill. A turkey load and choke is the right tool for the job. I'd have no issue with someone arkansasing a goose, but #3s through a modified choke will not do the same thing. And finishing a crippled goose is not the same as water swatting as you are normally very close and can make a clean headshot.

And if you have one surprise flush on you, you will not be able to shoot it because of the Havana omelet you released in your drawers. That is what a friend told me. 😕

I’ve killed a Tom on the wing before. One shot dropped him.

I had inadvertently sat down under a group of roosted birds. When the sun came up I saw they were all around me, one directly above my head and this guy on a branch way up in an aspen over one of my food plots.

They of course knew something was up, so as they came down they flew the length of the food plot (probably a couple hundred yards) instead of going straight down. As he coasted by me I knocked him down.

Small audience here, so an admission I'd not make during my turkey seminaring days, because I didn't want shot with them myself.. I shot most of mine with 2s directed at the bottom of the wattle. Missing was never an issue at the ranges I'd shoot, and the few that flushed as I was about to shoot died.

Don't hunt them, myself, at all these days, but picked a lot of small lead shot out of one a buddy killed last year, and can nearly choke thinking about TSS 9s. Don't remember it ever being an issue with 2s.
Killed one on the wing before and have called them in and smoked em . Turkeys are easy

They are hard, but not because they’re smart. It’s because they are so dumb that even they don’t know what they’re gonna do next.

My late pooch Moose put a Tom out of a fencerow one afternoon on our way back from a short mushroom hunt. They were about twenty feet from me and it was a bit unsettling to say the least. I also had the good luck to be able to see a hen with two poults take on (and win) a Red Tail hawk. She and the poults were eating young beans when the hawk made a unsuccessful try at a poult . I had no idea a turkey could fly so high or fast. Watched it all from my front porch.
