All my kennels are concrete, I just felt that looking long term that posed the best option as far as clean up and maintenace.
However, a friend of mine used the large river rock imbedded on sand. He seems pretty happy with it. I'm just not sure how it holds up after frequent washings. As far heat goes, as long as you have adequate shade and ventilation it shouldn't be a problem.
