my entire first season hunting ducks was spent without using a duck call. (mainly because if i blew on the one i owned i made sounds resembling a racoon geting drug down the freeway at 80MPH..lol) i won't say that i killed ALOT of ducks that first year, but i usually got a few. and this was hunting on heavily pressured public land with a lot of competition too.

take killindux advice and practice with that call as much as you can...you may not NEED it when you hunt, but you'll sure like having it once you learn how to use it.

a good call to start with will be somthing that you can blow easily and make some ducky sounds. you'll have to try a few before you find one you like. do you have someone to teach you how to use it? that makes things a lot easier if you do. ask them if you can use some of their calls while you learn. (preferably during the offseason)

for some calls to look into that won't hurt the ol' checking account too bad check out the thread titled "calls for under 40 dollars" in this forum. there is a long list of inexpensive calls that would be good for you to get started with.

as for what kind of calls you will actually need? probably not more than just a good hen mallard call that you can blow moderately well with at first. as time goes on you can expand yor calls out to meet your hunting needs.

it never hurts to bump them periodically. especially as many new members as we take on. it's pretty tough to go through every post in every forum here so keeping things visible is the key. this isn't to say that you'll sell them if you bump them everyday, but it doesn't hurt for them to be at the top of the list. good luck.

this is entirely too funny. i can't believe you actually posted this. my wife found out that i got 2 new calls, (1 hasn't arrived yet, got from ebay) and this weekend my chores were to:

1) hang new spice racks in the pantry.
2) fix electrical socket on a lamp for my 6 y/o daughter
3) assemble a new chest of drawers for previously mentioned 6 y/o
4) assemble new night stand/end table
5) seal and paint new furniture.
6) confirmed order from the furniture store for a new dining room table, 4 chairs, and baker's rack for the breakfast.

i got to thinking about it last night during the final touches of furniture assembly and those 2 duck calls cost me a fortune...
