I just picked up my first 28 gauge primarily to be used as upland gun. During my research online and YouTube about the 28 ran across it also being used as a duck gun so I was thinking of giving it a shot during the season and see how it goes. I was wondering what is the consensus favorites on loads, chokes and shot size I can give a try on the pattern board at my local club.

The shotgun is a Charles Daly 202 o/u it came with 5 chokes cylinder through full. I was looking into adding a light modified choke from carlsons and also giving bismuth a try this year. Any information is gladly welcomed!

Lots of prior posts here and at refugeforums about 28ga for ducks. As well as loads. Should be able to find with search function. My name, toasty, hamernhonkers, azdukhunter, Bullet225ho, have all posted stuff. There is a current thread yesterday at refuge on best commercial 28ga duck loads.

Me personally, most 28ga duck has been with HW13 shot from RSI, using the 1oz load in 2.75" hull that BPI publishes.

Bullet tested that load and found it to be overpressure 15,268psi using once fired Monarch cheddites with a slight gaep, 24.5gn lilgun. Recommends 23gn, which is how I load it.

There is a load both toasty and I had tested, and also Hawglips something very close, a duplex steel tss, that is great and posted about.

Go to Bullet225ho.com and buy all his 28ga loads for like $25, there are 10 or more. Bismuth. Steel, duplex. Also 3" but your gun is probably not 3". He is the leading guy for 28ga nontox testing, and it is worthwhile to float him a few $ to help him continue testing new stuff for us to use.

I'm putzing around loading 28ga now for duck season. There are a ton of threads on steel 6s vs 4s, and most guys seem to be liking 6s better inside 30yds... getting more kills via head and neck cns hits with the more pellets. I haven't gone smaller than 4s, but the recent testimony is compelling.

I plan on loading bismuth loads, and some duplex steel/tss. And also some 7/8oz steel and 6/8oz steel loads from bullet. Haven't finalized which yet.

My buddy @azdukhuntr may see this and say his load this year, he is all 28ga now... used to be 20ga.

I did see on the refuge forum post you recommended me to search for that a bunch of people were recommending #6 steel inside 30 yds with IC chokes. I don't plan on taking shots further then 30 anyways I never liked taking far shots. I was all 12 gauge but I used the 28 first time during dove season and had blast with it. It's definitely grown on me

1. Shot size is entirely dependent on the size of your game. GW teal or swans??
2. Choke selection is entire dependent on the distance at which you will be shooting those birds. Twenty yards on small sloughs, or forty yards pass shooting?
3. The best loads for the pea-shooters contain TSS shot. Take your pick.
