I've got it down to the Foiles Strait Meat Honker, and the Zink Money maker. I want all pro and cons of both calls before i spend $150 on a call. All opinoins are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
David
I got a SMH...I like it a lot. Personally, I don't think you can go wrong either way...IMO. They are both quality calls.
I have heard that Zink calls a great calls but take a while to learn how to blow...but what short reed isn't. I also heard that the SMH was an easy call to learn on...but I didn't find it to be that way. It took some playing around with it, just like any other short reed.
Not that your are, but if you are new to short reeds and are trying to pick the one you can just pick up and blow with ease, likely not gonna happen either way you go.
To avoid spending 150.00 check out the Yard Sale section of the Foiles forum...people always have nice calls they are looking to sell or trade, both Zink and Foiles. You might save yourself 50.00 or so.
The SMH is a great all around call. The MM is very easy to blow, faster, and louder than the SMH. They have different tones. The SMH is a little deeper and the MM is a little higher. The SMH has a lot of tune range. The MM seams to me to be kind of a narrow tune range. Both good calls, but not the same at all to me.
I have the SMH and like it alot..
It was my first call after the zink poly power clucker and I really enjoy it.
I agree that it does have a have a higher tone but with some practice you can get some really good low tone sounds with it.
Other than that it was mostly a feel decision for me. The SMH felt better in my hand than the MM did.
I don't think you can go wrong with either..
you could always buy both
SMH will take a lot more, air, but will be easier to control down low, and sounds goosier in general.
The MM uses the air you put through it more efficiently (if done properly), so it is easier to blow, and is fatser, which is great for the high stuff, but generally harder to control down low than the SMH.
Both are awesome calls. I am a Zink guy, but for hunting the only way i would go MM over SMH is if the MM was a wood model - coco or birds-eye. Best advice - buy both.
I agree with brent. The money maker hits the high notes with ease. The smh is much easier to control down low. The money maker will break on a dime and if you are not careful on the moans, the call will break into a cluck before you know it.
If you have the time to become proficient with the money maker it is the way to go. Eventually you can get a smh to mess around with. Both are good calls.
When practicing with other calls during the off season and picking up the money you forget how easy the mm breaks and have to step back for a second.
Just an idea, but have you tried the Showtime? I have one and I like it just a little better than the MM. Has a wider tune range, but if tuned about the same as the MM it is just as fast, but maybe a little better bottom end. I don't think it is quite as loud, but plenty loud for hunting and the stage. I like the smaller insert better than the MM.
Personally, I would figure out a way to buy both. Like others have stated, these calls have opposite characteristics. The SMH will give your goosey and low end calls, which might be nice when working them in close and the MM is higher and faster which you might use when they are further out. Just a thought.......
