FRIDAY - Naskeag point or more aptly Nastykeag (Brooklin) was miserably this past Friday. High southerly winds combined with an outgoing tide made set-up near impossible and we saw 1 duck (golden eye) all morning long (6-10:00 AM) Finally, we decided to leave after a snow storm began and the winds increased. . . had to carry all of our gear and the boat back to the landing through 200 yards of mudflat. . . not fun.
After our morning "adventure" we decided that instead of going home and drinking away our sorrow that we would instead try one more spot. We loaded the boat and motored to this point for some pass shooting. GOOOD thing! Had some GREAT afternoon shooting and stayed on this rock ledge until the high tide made us move around 3:00 PM. Golden Eyes and Oldsquaw galore! What a blast!
SATURDAY - Decide to go with a good thing and went back for more pass shooting. Wind was calm at 5:00 AM BUT by the time I set the first decoy in the water the wind started blowing a gale. Took us over 40 minutes to set-up 3 long lines of 24 decoys. . . unbelieveable. . . what a cluster! As soon as we were done the wind stopped!!!
Ledge was a little soggy but comfortable and as soon as we sat down the singles started to buzz the point. I can't even begin to count the number of Golden Eyes that flew by our location! Now usually these birds will buzz by the point and head into the large saltmarsh never to be seen again BUT someone was in the marsh this day and kept blasting them out. I would hearshots fired and then 2-3 minutes later. . . presto. . . here come the Golden Eyes AGAIN! Was GREAT fun!
