My soon-to-be brother-in-law has taken up tthe wonderful sport of goose-blastin' with me, and I am thinking about getting a good call for him for his Birthday as a gift from my son - his godson. I want to get him something good that he will be able to use and to keep. Trouble is, he is just starting out, and though I don't have the heart to tell him, he sounds like ****, even on a flute . I would like to get him an acryllic single reed that is fairly user friendly for a beginner, as he has been using my old H-81. The obvious choice seems to be a SR-1, since I have one and it is insanely easy to blow for a SR call. I am open to other suggestions, however, as I don't want my affinity for Zinks to be the deciding factor - even though I am getting myself a new MoneyMaker  .

Thanks.

There's a ton of great call makers who can make him a truely personalized call. They sound just as good as the big companies, but I've always thought it pretty darn cool to get a call with your name engraved on it. I can think of several makers off the top of my head, if you want to go in that direction.

That would be my first move - trouble is, we are in the Montreal area and no one stocks a wide selection of good calls. The Cabelas doesn't open here until summer 2009. Maybe I'll just buy him a decent flute and take him to Cabelas when it opens - the practice would be good for him, I guess.

Buy him Honker Talk and a good inexpensive short reed like a Meat Grinder, or Goozilla so he can learn to blow a SR first and get a year of use and practice. Then take him out to the Cabelas next summer to pick out a call that fits him. There is no point to a good acrylic call if he doesn't know how to blow it. Because he is new to it I would skip the flute.

i second the "skip the flute"! it just teaches you how to make goosey noises, it doesnt teach you how to properly bring up your air.... imo it will be easier for him to start off on a short reed, it may be discouraging to him at first but in the long run it will pay off! just my .02

Just to close this off, we both went to the hunting/fishing show in Montreal, and he got to try a few. He seems to share my affinity for Zink. He decided on the Cocobola MM - the same call I plan to buy. I have decided to get a LM-1 since I already have the SR-1, and will prolly buy a Coco MM for myself later too - I can see me getting it and a SMH or a HPH between now and when the season opens.

Thanks for the input.
