When he's young start off with a starter pistol. You can start right away. Do it when he's having fun and fire a shot from a short distance maybe 20 yards. If he stops and looks at you act like nothing's out of the ordinary. Eventually you can move in closer and closer.
Keep doing that and he won't care about the noise and even relate it to fun things.

Once your confident he could care less about the pistol, fire off your shotgun quite a distance away, 40 yards? while doing something he loves...preferably retrieving. Eventually work your way closer to him.

I would wait until the pup is around 15 weeks old....take him to the trap range and get him out of the truck about 100 yds away and play fetch with him...gradually work your way closer....once you get close enough that he looks up when the guns are fired, stay at that distance and continue fetch....once he is able to ignore, move closer....in about 2 or 3 sessions, you will have him nearly to the shooting line...

I started as soon as he was big enough to bring back a bumper. He was still quite a puppy.

I also used a starter pistol.

I stood some distance from him (50-60 yards) and had a buddy hold onto him. I'd throw a bumper high in the air towards him and fire the gun at it's high point. At that point my buddy let's go of him and he takes off after the bumper. I just work my way closer as I go and before too long I was right next to him. All done in one day.

I'd repeat the same process for a couple of days.

After a while I strapped a bumper launcher (that works with 22 blanks) to the stock of an old 22 rifle I had. It doesn't take long for them to figure out that when that barrel gets raised fun is about to start.

E Collar and DVD's???

Your are soooo far away from using that E Collar I would not even break it out of the box until that dog (AND YOU) have been trained!

My buddy ruined a great black lab with his E Collar and now has a real nice house pet. His dog's afraid to do anything now! I wanted to put that collar on him and give him full throttle!!

My Chocolate's 9 years old this summer and I haven't had an E collar on him in years. He's one of the best duck dog's I've ever seen. (of course my opinion could be a little biased)

DON"T ZAP THAT PUPPY!!!!!!!!

I have never used an E-collar. I think that their are soo many other
ways of training. There is no reaon or time (in my opinion) to ever use one. But thats just my opinion. I have trained dogs form pups and older dogs without the use of one.

Just pick a training method and stick with it. I have used the healing stick, wonder lead, and the e-collar on my dog, but you have to use each one of them correctly...follow a proven method...don't just throw it on your pup and let him have it....there is plenty of good information on this site for just about any question about training that you can think of...and a few things that you haven't thought of....be patient, and don't get ahead of yourself, otherwise you will turn your dog into nothing more than a dog-food processor.

I needed an e-collar on my pointer but their personalities are light years away from labs. I'm hoping i won't need one.

Remember that you're not supposed to teach with an e-collar, it's a tool to help with commands the dog already knows.

James that lady trainer I referred you to in your area has choc's she uses for hunting and does not use a collar to train.

Now I have one dog that I think would be better if I used a collar on but I am not 100% confident in my ability to use one and I am willing to have the dog work to the level it is at rather than chance a mistake.

As you are just getting your pup spend lots of time reading up on the obedience and intial training steps so you are familiar with what you need to go though. This is a time + quality process. More quality time you spend on training the better your dog will be so plan out and stick to a program.

Do not do so much as to tire the pup out so it loses its drive. The pup should always want to go with you as you are the most fun guy to be around and you should stop your training period at the point while the dog still wants to do more. Get you pup on birds or bird wings early -- this will really help down the road. Gun introductions are easy if controlled. What really helps is having the pup exposed to all types of noise and people as it is socializing.

Good luck

i agree with ya 2 tollers iam not experienced enough to use the collar and same as u said i dont want to make a misstake and ruin my dog beacuse i was in a hurry to make him learn something i paln on making this puppy my hunting partner and want him to turn out right as far as quality time i plan on taking him to work with me as i work close to home and there r lots of people comming and going so i hope this will help him be good and socialized and as far as noise there r lots of loud ones so i hope with the books and the dvds and the people on here i can make a good hunting dog out of him
thx james

My 2 cents - you need to find a trainer in your area & take the pup out on a leash and watch other dogs do marks.

In the past I've staked out my puppy while helping throw marks for others.

You'll be associating birds & gun fire which is exactly what you want. I know there's some dog clubs in your area - you should look them up.

Remember you can only use the collar to reinforce what the dog has already learned.

2 tollers is right on the money with the birds, birds, birds, birds.

Good luck
