How in the "hall" do you use the proper stance in shooting laying down with a back rest, like layout blinds. You don't, you just practice on clays this way. I don't even set up at my age but just shoot from the laying down position. It works! Ned S the young 79 yr old. :rofl: :rofl: :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

I like this, too: I have an Ithaca NID that I really like, and I shot it really well. One day I watched while my son shot it and noticed how short it looked when he shouldered it. I realised it fit me the same way. I'm with Jim on clothing fit. My rem1100 stock has two spacers which I can add/remove according to weather clothing conditions.
My Rem 870 had a stock with the wrong curv so I heated the rear stock with a hairdryer and straightened it out.
Th length of pull as a good compromise to allow me to see the sight plane well with out seeing any end barrel..as both rems did not line up the bead corrrectly I solved that problem by using different height TRUE GLO front ramps.
I did these mods with wood stocks and in the last year replaced both rems with OEM camo lightweight stocks and forearms and somehow they mount up pretty good with the exception of a modified spacer on the rem1100 about 1/4"

This is what works for me as far as "drop at the comb" is concerned.
Once you get the Lenght of Pull to where you can comfortably and easily shoulder it, Drop at the Comb is the most important in my view.
It only works on guns with a middle bead - - -
Close your eyes and shoulder the gun, when you look down the barrel (without moving your head on the comb) the two beads should appear as a figure 8, with perhaps a slight bit of space between the loops of the 8.
For me - - - if the beads line up the gun will shoot low, if there is too much space between the beads the gun will shoot high.
The true test of fit is the patterning board. Put a bright post it note in the center of the board.
Quickly mount and shoot the gun while focusing on the post it note - - - if your pattern is not fairly well centered your gun does not fit.
Be sure to shoot both barrels of doubleguns as the barrels sometimes will shoot to different spots !
You can raise or lower the point of impact by adjusting comb height - - -

I hope this is ware i should ask this question i have a browning maxus i like the gun but i don't shoot it that well i have to crane my head over to get a good site picture on it and really push the stock into my cheek were i get a real good black and blue mark from it i have a # 2 shim in it i tried the # 3 and don't see any difference in the fit just more cast i have an A5 and it fit's me no problem so my question is there a after market stock or something i can do to make the comb on my stock lower to get a better fit oh and i have looked at other manufactures and they are all about the same in fitting me anyway thanks for any help or suggestions.

I had a good friend come over and look at the Maxus he is a long time hunter and competition shooter we compared the gun to my beneli found the beneli had a drop at the heel of 2.5 " and the Maxus had a drop of only 2" this made a big difference in the fit to me anyway using the shims and one of the length of pull shims cutting it down I was able to get the drop down to 2-3/8 " on the Maxus this will really help just thought I would pass it along if anyone else has the problem.

I have a Maxus and had an SX3 that I could not shoot well at all. I bought two Franchi Affinitys and suddenly I was Deadeye Dick. After doing a lot of research I found the issue. The Franchi's have a 1.5" DAC, the Maxus has a much lower comb and the SX3 has a much higher comb. After shimming the Maxus to raise the comb and shimming the SX3 to lower the comb I shot them better but still not as well as the Franchi's. I traded the SX3 for a Silver b/c I did not want to pay a lot of money to have the comb lowered. The Silver and the Maxus have the same DAC. I then bought two comb raising kits and installed them on the Maxus and Silver. The kits allowed me to adjust the DAC on both shotguns to 1.5". Now I am Deadeye Dick with the Maxus and Silver. The kits cost me $22.95 apiece and were probably the best money I've ever spent that was firearm related.

Lat your forearm out with the gun in it. The recoil pad should go directly into the crease of your forearm and elbow and you should be able to hold the trigger normally. It fits.
I notice several guys in this post are quite skilled in the description and fitting of shotguns. I have a question for you gents. Having purchased a new shotgun ( Franchi Affinity 12 ga) I'm a bit curious about the spacers that come with the gun and the ones that change the "cast" of the gun. Realizing that each shooter is built differently, how would a shooter know which cast spacer would be better or worse for their shooting style? Is it better to have someone observe you mounting the gun and based on their findings then alter the shotgun with the appropriate spacers?
The reason I ask is it seems futile to mount or change a spacer on your own not knowing if your sight plain has improved. I gather the best way would be to do so at the range and keep shooting clay birds while making changes? Seeing an improvement in shooting performance would provide the answer? Thanks for your replies in advance.

Great sticky with great info. unfortunately some of us (me) do not understand what a lot of this means. If you could please give some description of what each is, what it means, where on the gun it is and what on the gun it adjusts, it what directions and how.
The more I read the more I realize how important fit is as opposed to the old "scatter gun" thoughts.

I've tried various pumps and autos, keep coming back to the Remington 870, after 40 years I must just be conditioned to it. No matter how old the 870 is I pick up 12GA, 16GA or 20GA, it just feels right, is there something wrong with me, inquiring minds want to know, LOL.

used my bakail u/o opening weekend and shot ok with it...doubling on canadas and a mixed canada and mallard
used my bakail SxS with zero chokes (been cut off) and doubled on malllards Monday morning
Monday night took the H&R pump and tripled on mallards :thumbsup:
guess I fit them all pretty well :no:

This is how I check my shotguns for fit, and stock length. It also will show if your p.o.a is hi or low, left or right to a certain point. I have a small flashlight I use to see how clean my barrel is on my 50 cal. caplocks. I can drop it down the barrel of my shot gun and pick a spot on the wall,( in a dark room ) and shoulder my gun at that spot and it will cast a 3 inch spot of light at 15 ft. I can also see where my bead is, in the light on the wall. I have a short l.o.p so most times when I do this with a stock that is to long, my barrel will be pointing to the left a little (right hand shooter) and when I shorten the stock, it will bring my p.o.a more in line. It's just a starting point, but it works for me. Jerry

Sometimes it works and other times it's a hair off ! If you understand the basic's of gun fitting ( which is easy to understand )
but it take REAL know how when you get into the finer points of adjustment . Most hunting guns only need a few minor
adjustments to be in the ball park as there usually isn't much time setting up before we shoot or our feet are tangled-up
in the mud or vegetation not allowing us to mount the gun properly .
Here are a couple suggestions to make your gun shoot where you're looking !
LOP.......take in consideration the time of year you are shooting most......in what clothes you wear .
POA......gun mount , when your gun mount is the same (or as close as can be) your gun fit will be more accurate .
POI .....with a pattern that's center horizontal being the MOST important adjustment , are the others are easy .
Cast.....With cast-off being for RIGHT handed shooters , POI will depend on how chubby your cheeks are ( 1/8" can move
the patterns center 4" at 40 yds ) use shims if your lucky , otherwise leave it to stock fitter ,IMT !
All your test shooting should be with a FULL (.035) Choke with lead shot.......a MOD (.020 ) with steel shot ( 4's ,3, 2 and 1's )

It's a given that you will shoot better and with lesser negative affects from recoil with a gun that fits you than one that doesn't. My fit on the trap field turned out to be a bulky stocked Browning Superposed in 3" mag weight class that I set several Club Milestones with, my closest competitor used a Winchester/Cooey single shot and he did almost as well. I could never satisfactorily rank up a half decent score with any of the Remington guns and yet my neighbour won several sets of Winchester fancy combination Skeet/Trap sets with his old 1100, and the funny part is on two occasions he was using these Winchesters at Winchester shoots and when they broke down he continued on with his old Rem and won a couple more sets of Wins....LOL
