Have used a lot of steel shot in the past, but have been out of the duck hunting a couple of years. Just got back at it this year and shot up all the rest of my old steel. Shot a couple of boxes of bismouth I got cheep a few years ago. #4 bis. really did the job on the ducks out to 40 or a little more. BB bis. was great on geese. Hated to shoot the steel again when I ran out. The new bis. cost too much, thinking about reloading it if I can find it cheep. Just picked up some Hevi with the Gander Mountain $30 end of year deal and with the Rem. rebate the 2 3/4" duck loads were reasonable. Wanted the #5's, but they didn't have it in waterfoul loads. Settled for the #6 for pellet count and I couldn't get the multiple box discount on the 2 3/4" turky loads in #5. Was trying to get into the Hevi for around a buck a pop. I have zero experience with the Hevi. Has anyone had experience with the #6 Hevi? How did it work on bid ducks? Late season? Range?

just like the rest of heavey. seem to get into a animal better. shot one time jumping some greenheads and dropped three stone dead. i usually don't like to brag on stuff like that but they were all sooooooh dead i couldn't believe it. Bad part was one drake was dead. Others were hens. So, it can be good and bad to get a little extra.

You will love the 6's on ducks. They are awesome and the ballistics will get you out 50-55 yards easy.

#6 is strong medicine for ducks. :thumbsup: i sure wish i could afford to shoot it all the time.

I have toyed with it for a couple years, but I finally made the switch to Hevi for good. The moment of revelation came when I was testing my new Patternmaster choke before the season. I was shooting at a piece of 1/2 inch plywood. I shot some #4 Hevi from 40 yards...and it went right through. Devastated the back of it.
I flipped the plywood end for end, then shot some BBB steel from the same distance... nothing went through. I shot at the exact same spot with the BBB's from 30 yards, and still only a few went through. How could I argue with that? And, ballistically, they are supposed to be about equal.
I ended up saving the Hevi 4's for eiders, and using mainly 6's throughout the season. I certainly noticed a difference. I think the cost is negligible.
I shoot 3 inch. I figure it costs about .50 per shell for good steel, and about 1.70 per shell for Hevi. But with Hevi, they are dead when they hit the water (or real close to it).
I don't know how many times I've had to "give 'em a couple more" in the water using steel. Even figuring for misses, for a four bird limit, I'm only out a few bucks more. I figure I make it up somewhere else - weaving my own grass mats, or buying cheaper post-hunt beer...
