Here are a couple pics of the beautiful drake hooded mergie I shot last weekend. I'm not sure if any of you out there shoot a lot of these but they have been a rarity in my waterfowl career. This is the first drake I have shot and I was pretty excited about it so I thought I would share it with you all.

Oh man, hopefully Mike doesn't see this, he had a horrible missed opportunity on a nice drake hoodie. Choked under pressure I guess!

Choked under pressure!? How about my hunting buddy on the right side of the blind where the Hoodies flew into misidentified the drake as a goldeneye (How I will never know) and decides no shot needs to be called, and instead shoots the bird for himself...
This was hours after the fact that we had a conversation about hooded mergs and how if I shot a nice drake I'd have it mounted.

What are friends for I guess

I was out scouting on the Carson the other day on my way home from town... didn't have any gear with me because I didn't plan on hunting, anyway, saw a odd looking bird down below me on the river so I jumped out to get a better look... this is what it was... I had never seen one before. Looks like I gotta get my gear back in the truck and see if he's still around... beautiful bird... Congrats!

My dad hunted the Carson this weekend and said they are all over the place down there. My dad and his buddies shot three, all drakes. I guess it's not as " few and far between" as I thought it was to shoot these little guys. In any case they are beautiful birds and a lot of fun to knock out of the sky.

Ha ha, no mike, I turn all of the waterfowl I shoot into to jerky because that is the only way I enjoy it. I'm sure guys out there have recipes that they swear by and believe me I've tried my share but the only way I like it when it's made into jerky. I know mergies taste just like the fish and crap they eat so I only try and shoot the hoodies when I get a chance.

Ah don't feel bad, there's a guy on here that shoots the big ones. As for me I've been gunning for a nice drake hood for the wall for awhile. Missed my chance again today... its just stupid!
