I went out today in south cntral MN thinking some new birds would be in with the NW wind from yeasterday afternoon. Duck numbers were poor, I was really surprised. I saw 2 flocks of Tundara Swans and 1 flcok of Bills, and 1 flock ofGWteal and several flocks of Canadas that were migrating through.

What was a around were "educated". I should have had my limit--but bad timing (Ohhhhh as they went past - I hate that when they do that and come in from behind you). I did call in 1 single Honker from 400 yds up and a 1/2 mile away right in over the decoys  And ended up with 1 Mallard and 1 Bluebill and lost a Gaddy. I clean missed on 3 Mallards---that 30 mph wind throwed me off with the right lead. But overall it was really poor birds numbers for this time of year IMO. So I can not complain.

And I saw a guy empty his gun on a migrating flock of Honkers that were at least 300 yds up :pissed:

Sounds like cold weather by Thuirsday, so hopefully some new birds in by end of the week.

16 days left of the season...........

Post up as to how you did.

Couple of really good weekends on gadwalls and widgeon in dakota then back to reality of crappy hunting in minnesota. Last weekend three shots fired in two days. Four hours of scouting in west central minn to try and find the birds. Problem was i could find geese but the season is closed already. As for ducks forget about it. The flight sunday evening consisted of two small flocks of mallards a mile high. I must have scouted thirty or fourty different sloughs in a couple of counties and saw virtually no ducks. A few scattered buffleheads was about it.I have seen it bad in minn this time of year before but never like this year. I mean there are no ducks.I am not going to hold my breath on thursday either as i it just is not a major front that will move ducks out of canada.Sounds like the ducks in canada will stay until they are frozen out or snow covers the fields according to alot of sources on the internet.I think they have figured it out in the last few years. Why come into the states knowing you will get blasted at nonstop everyday! They just get pressured way too hard in the us.

Last weekend I headed up to the Vermilion River south of Crane Lake for my traditional duck hunt on the opening weekend of deer season. I hunted Friday evening, Saturday morning and evening, and Sunday morning. In all that time, I saw fewer than 15 ducks. Finally, on Sunday morning in a blinding snow squall 4 ringbills came screaming right over my head with a 25 mph tail wind. They swung around and came in to land and I smacked 2 of them. This was VERY cool and a picturesque scene from a late season diver hunt, but it hardly makes up for THE WORST DUCK SEASON IN NORTHEASTERN MINNESOTA EVER. If it wern't for my 14 days in ND, I'd be heading for Arkansas right about now. Oh well, it's almost time to ice fish for mercury meat. Didn't there used to be a clean air act?

Hey Dunk221991,

I just recenly joined the site and was very excited to see that you are from Brainerd. I also reside in Brainerd and love to hunt. I have been in southern Minnesota the last few weekend hunting Pheasants, Ducks and Honkers. We did pretty good! The phesants are thick this year in on our land, which is great for my 1 year old pup. I noticed that you are seeing some geese and courious where you are at? I am guessing that you are going somwhere over by Staples, but not sure? I was hoping to get one last hunt in this weekend. I have a 16 ft duck boat with a bunch or diver decoys, but can not seem to find the ducks (locally). I only have about 30 geese decoys (full bodies and shells..felt heads) up here, but thought I might give it a try. Could you be so kind as to point me in the right dirrection? You may be hunting and not even get this in time, but I do appreciate any help and I am always looking for someone to join me. I have not lived in the area long enough to find a hunting partner. I have friends that say they hunt, but never seem to join me when I offer. To bad the waterfowl season is almost over...maybe next year? ALso, do you Pheasant hunt? Looking for some public land within an hour or so that may have 1 bird in it? Take Care!!! :salude:
