How to post pictures - a guide

There seem to be questions fairly regularly about how to post pictures here in the forum so I thought I would make a how-to guide.

First, you need a place to save your pictures on the web. There are a lot of places out there, but in this example I am going to use Photobucket. You can go to photobucket.com and sign up for a free account. Once you have an account you need to upload your photos.

Once you are logged into your account you should see this:

-Click on the "Browse" button and navigate to where your picture is stored on your computer.
-Click the name of your photo once you find it.
-Click the "Open" button.

Repeat the above process if you have more than one photo to upload to the web.
-When done, click on the "Upload" button.

Now the picture is uploaded to Photobucket and now you can use it in any post in any forum that allows images to be displayed. Now that the picture is ready for use you'll see it on your screen, similar to this:

Notice there are four fields below the picture:
Email and IM
Direct Link
HTML Tag
IMG Code

The one we want is the IMG Code. Photobucket makes it fairly simple, just click in the field to the right of the words IMG Code and the image text is copied to your local computers clipboard, like so:

Now that that text is copied to your local machine you can go into the post you are either creating on the forums, or a reply, and copy your text there. Type your message, your story about your hunt or whatever, and them simply paste the text by hitting the ctrl key and the v key on your keyboard at the same time. It will look like this:

Click the preview button and you'll see what it looks like, and if it all lays out like you wanted then you are good to go and can go ahead and hit the submit button to submit your new post or reply.

Hope that helps.

Here is a prickly little fellow that I ran into the other morning while heading back to look for ducks.

CAPITAL IMG:

lower-case img:

Capital or lower-case img doesn't matter. Some forums it does, but this forum doesn't care.

Also, if you already have some place other than photobucket this all works the same way. If you have the url (the www.whatever.com/mypicturename.jpg) then all you need is to use the buttons in your forum. Copy your url into your message, highlight it and then click on the "Img" button. You're good to go!

Good Idea - This existed before, but I haven't seen it since the change.
This has also been simplified a bit in the newest version of the site. You no longer need to have an image hosting account separate of your DHC account.
If you look in the box while posting your reply or creating a new post, there is a button that says "Upload picture" *ALSO NOTE - you must have the box for "Disable BBCode in this post" unchecked -

Click the button and the next window that opens will be an upload window. This is nice because you can automatically access pictures from your own computer by clicking "Browse"

Once you have located and selected the file on the list below, you will be presented with the upload window again...

Here you can change the maximum size and rotate the picture so no one has to tilt their head. As you can see, pictures are automatically re-sized.

When you are satisfied and think you've picked the right image, you can click on "send" in the lower right hand corner. You will then be shown a preview. At the bottom of this window is the option to insert the picture as "Standard" - this will close the window and place the image code in - all you do is continue typing your message.

You also have the option to insert the picture and upload another. Jsut make sure if you do this and want to type between images that you don't mess with the coding. This is a great option for showing us 4 pictures from your recent hunt.

Good idea SDK - hopefully people can see two ways of doing things now.

Do you have to have the pictures in your pc? Can I send a pic straight from Photobucket to my post?

It can come from photobucket, just copy the img code.
I am trying to post pics with the new format for the first time. It keeps telling me that the pic is too big. I can't figure out how to resize it.

You can resize a picture on your computer by opening it in a picture editing program (like paint, free on most windows computers) or by loading it onto a photo hosting website like photobucket.com
I have been trying to post pics for a while and simply cannot do it when in photobucket. When I click to the right of the img block nothing happens it just highlights blue. I'm not sure what to do. How do you copy the img code? Copy the img code from where? I click the image that I want to send, and then I click IMG to the right and then i'm stuck 'cause nothing happens.

You might need to highlight and copy the img code, it will look like
Code:
[img]http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a358/DeltaDave/MDGC0361.jpg[/IMG]
So basically put
Code:
[img][/img]
around the image address and it will look like this.
