I drove 300 miles to Summer Lake, but I didn't leave until early Saturday morning, so I missed the morning shoot. I hunted on the north end of the area and threw out about a dozen dekes. Within 15 minutes a couple of pintail hens came around. I took that as a good sign and let 'em go. I didn't see another duck the entire rest of the day. But that's OK. I went mostly to attend the DU banquet and meet up with some old friends.
Sunday morning, I got up at 5:00 and noticed there wasn't a cloud in the sky. I went to the church breakfast and talked with one of the local ODFW biologists. He said that the birds would be hanging out on the big water in the refuge and on the lake itself and hunting the north end of the refuge wouldn't be worth my while. So, I headed back to Portland.
Hopefully, the opener at Sauvie Island this weekend will be better.
