Insert Falling Out of Call?

I'm new to duck hunting and I'm thinking about getting a decent call or two before next duck season, but I've heard somewhere that inserts will randomly fall out of your call if you don't somehow use something to prevent this.

What exactly do people mean by "the insert falls out" and how can you prevent this from happening?

Thanks

They will come loosen up as you walk and run around setting decoys and picking up birds. That's why, when you put your calls on your lanyard...you put a loop around the insert and barrel...and you don't have to worry. I learned the hard way.

You can press the insert into the barrel as tight as you can, but you don't want it over tight...as you may have a hard time getting the insert out to clean or dry the call. if it's a wooden call, you may end up splitting the barrel.

Duck calls are more prone to loosing a insert as most are friction fit in to the barrel. Most goose calls have a o-ring or two in place to help this not happen as easily. I agree with the fellow above get a good lanyard with double drops off each connection so you can secure both the barrel and the insert in case they were to come loose. If you have guts falling out of your call that is not a good sign at all....

Quality duck calls that use a taper fit have an o-ring as well. This doubles the protection from the insert falling out. Also shouldered fit calls use an o-ring as well
On a lanyard use a double drop per call...one on the barrel and one on the insert

But I take the o-ring off lol. I like the rattle you get from no o-ring, but 99% of people out there wouldn't be able to know the difference while they were blowing it. It is definitely easier to make a call using an o-ring fit though, and less chance of the barrel cracking or losing an insert
