That's his only post ever. Probably won't ever come back to check replies. Hunting is great for everything; deer, pheasant, ducks and geese more than anyone can count in every field and every farmer says yes. Hope I helped @

When there is water the area can be good. Pressure will be higher now thanks to the legislators that rammed through a change to non resident licenses. You'll see more pintails and wigeon compared to east of 281. Did you draw a license for this fall?

The legislature added 5 counties to a pool of licenses that were supposed to be for private land around Pierre, which put in jeopardy public access on a bunch of private land around Pierre.

This year's draw statistics are up in the gfp website. NRW-00B-86, the 10 day statewide license had 4311 applicants for 3725 licenses.
After first and second draw there are 1287 three day licenses still available for NRW-00X86, which would work for the area your farm connection is located in. I'm actually surprised there is that many left, and wholely suspect that the guides will market the **** out of those available licenses and we'll see more pressure in a part of the state that would otherwise have some of the last quiet waterfowl hunting available.

Clark, Webster, Watertown, DeSmet area, I was out there the 2nd weekend of November. Farmers who gave us permission in the past turned us down. Only a few fields held mallards, I get the mallard migration was late last fall. It was so bad we ended up hunting honkers. :lame:

It's not like it was 10 years ago as far as pressure goes.

In terms of pressure, you were in a whole different world compared to the area the OP is asking about. You were hunting the area everybody else in the state and from out of state was hunting. The pressure in that area is a huge reason us as residents didn't want 5 more counties in north central SD added to the "Pierre" lic enses. It was an area we could go to and have good water or field hunts without seeing many other hunters. Honestly, last fall, we were field hunting mallards on the second day of the season, and barely hunted water from then on, because we got really nice pulses of mallards pretty much weekly all season. The last week of October was really good, with the flocks building in size and still holding lots of widg, pinnies, and teal in them to make for some nice bonus birds in the corn.

I'm sure mallards move in and out all October into November in that area. I've seen it year after year, it's a consistent area. Maybe it was the time we were there. We had golf weather for early November not the 40/20 degrees we were wishing for. One day we drove back roads from Clark - Webster - Henry down to Desmet and saw some mallard but not the numbers I would expect. Sure found some fields but not like in past year. I think the major mallard migration showed up a week or two later. Plus the number of hunters . . . it's not like when I first started hunting that area. I didn't even apply this year, probably never will. In North Dakota I have better farmer contacts with just a good hunting and even less pressure.

The GFP is fighting the good fight but it's hard to resist the almighty dollar when town like Clark have hotels close, bars close and the town shrinking.
