Thought I would put in for the lottery this year for duck/goose hunting but their web site is a little confusing. What licenses do I need to get and I couldn't figure out how to actually apply for the lottery? Do I have to buy a license first and then apply or can I just apply for the lottery and then get what I need if I get drawn? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

Were you able to view the PDF of the paper application? I agree the webpage is all over the place. There are different NR zones, with there own regulations. I believe you decide on a zone, send in application with payment, and hope you get drawn. If you don't, you'll get your money back. The NR license covers your Waterfowl permit, and our state migratory permit. You would need a small game to shoot any, and of course a federal stamp is required. First deadline is July 7 I believe. If this doesn't clear it up, PM me, and I'll do a little more research. No one visits the SD forum anymore. Maybe tornado chaser will chime in.

I have gone to SD several times and will again this year. I have a preference point this year so I will get a ten day license. When the application opens up, it will be a lot easier to understand. Have you started an account on the SDGFP website? Thats the first step. Its pretty easy after that. The gfp revamped their website some time ago and its been dismal, at best. If you are successful in the lottery, that's all the license you need, along with a federal duck stamp. If you are not successful with the 10 day license, there will be 3 day private land licenses available. We got those last year and had 2 awesome hunts and one mediocre hunt. Good luck
