My old dog can't hunt no more she just can't take the physical exertion any more. Lost the family beagle that could find you anything you asked it to, too a large feline he tracked down and cornered before I could get there, a 30 pound dog should know he can't take out a 100 pound cat by himself ,but he would take on anything no matter how big or mean it was. Anyway I'm kind of looking around for a new dog something that has good retreiving and flushing skills for ducks and upland game. It must be a good companion animal good with kids and just have a good disposition. I'd like to know what breed would be best for this and why.
Easy to train would be a bonus.

Also my old dog has been heartbroken ever since we lost my other dog, she was trailing him when he ran the cat down and when she got a look at what they caught she hauled behind for home. We live in the country and she won't leave the yard and just sits around all day and isn't interested in anything anymore, any suggestions on what to do???????

If your just looking for an allround good bird dog that is a great companion and good with kids I would suggest a Lab. I know everyone has labs, but there is a reason they are so popular. They have great temperment, are VERY patient wth kids, very easily trainable and good hunters. Chesepeakes are also very good dogs but IMHO they are not quite as good with kids. Some may argue with that, but my chessie is all about work, he doesn't play with small kids as well, he just sits there looking at them.

A PUDLEPOINTER I'm not kidding. check them out at Cederwood kennels on the web. I have one They hunt ducks,water or land. Upland They have great noses Have a clasic point and basicly train themselves. I have never had a better house dog or pet. Never been aggressive to dogs nor people (will bark at strangers) I will not own anything else after him. they hunt fur as well check them out. I know of more breeders but the one in Idaho is the nearest to you that I know of. That site gives alot of info on the breed anyway

Weimaraners make excellent companions are great w/ kids and will hunt anything you train them to. they are extremely intelligent so training is fairly easy. their large size also is a plus around large cats ect.

GERMAN SHORTHAIR..die protecting the family..Hunt till they drop..The more you're with them the better they hunt for you..not themselves.SMART..A real family member..on my 3rd dog ...all lived till old age..had labs..kept 6-8 begals for blue bird days..none compare :withstupid: .Good Luck..

Two years ago I made the best choice I could ever make, I bought a Choc. Lab from Krestland Kennels (Victor NY). The breeder's name is Sue Patrick and she was fantastic. My dog is kind of the shot stocky English line Lab. He weighs about 68 lbs and is a Bird hunting fool. Lots of people say that Show line dogs won't be good hunters. My buddy isn't going to win any field trials, but he sure will bring those birds back to me. The other day my 6month old niece was over. I was amaized at how my dog acted. He layed down on the floor and let her pull his whiskers ,and his jowels like it was all good. When the kid took a nap, he layed down next to her and fell asleep. Want to talk about being a good dog with kids.
