I am looking for a youth gun for my 11 year old. I have him shooting a older 20 gauge 870 wingmaster, he doe's fairly well with it but it does'nt fit him very well. He has shot my 12 gauge quite a bit also and can handle the gun's recoil no problem. Leaning more toward's a 12 gauge so I don't have to buy him a new gun in a couple more year's. Don't want to spend a whole bunch, loking for a 870 express posibly. Do they make different stock's I could switch out on a gun, thinking maybe a 24" barrel also a 28" barrel seem's a little heavy on the end for him. Got to be careful with what I get him, if he get's a gun that fit's him well, he might put me to shame :yes: :laughing: :yes: :thumbsup:

They most certanly do make shotguns for "smaller-framed" individuals.

Now in my oppinion, you would be better off w/ a mossberg super Bantam.

It comes w/ a 24" barrell (as opposed to the 21"), and you can get it in either the 20 or 12 guage.

I have had better luck w/Mossberg....... Just my Oppinion :thumbsup:

When I was young I tried both guns. The mossberg felt better to me. The forestock is closer to the action than the 870's so the kids don't have to reach as far to work the action. Also the thumb safety is a plus, it's much easier and more natural to use. Plus the mossberg's cheaper :thumbsup: The msrp's are way higher than the actual price that you'll see anywhere that sells them. Either way you can still get it for less $$. Just my opinion.

Remington also makes a youth/womens frame in the 1100 too. I bit pricey for new, but maybe you can find a used one, but they seem very hard to find in used.

I agree on the mossberg shotgun idea. If you get the SUPER Bantam it comes with a stock shim that when taken out will go all the way to 12 lop. My 7 yr old is getting one this year for his birthday.

i can second the 870 youth as a gun that a smaller person can handle. I hunt with a 10yr old boy that shoots ducks and pheasants with his. he handles it ok.

I carried a youth model 870 just like the one in the picture to get me started. Bought another 870 20 gauge with a 24 in barrel to make a turkey gun out of.

And if you are into deer slug hunting, there are combos available with twist barrel for the sabots.

i dont recomend buying a 20 gauge because if he can handle a 12 its a waste of money to buy the 20 :thumbsup:

All he needs, a stoeger model 2000, a proven reliable auto loader owned by benelli dseigned arounda benelli montefeltro and uses the benelli action. The best part is that it costs the same as an 870.

I bought my son (12 yr old) a benelli 20 gauge and he ended up shooting my old 870 - 3 months later. His 1st duck season he was shooting my mossy 935 - I went and got him (that's what I told the Mrs.) an 835 for this season. He loves the way the mossberg's fit. BUY HIM A 12 - he'll grow into it in no time at all.

I had the wife shoulder several different youth models. The Mossberg looked the best fit. The pump slide is MUCH closer, so, she doesnt LOOK like she's reaching for the action. Something ta think about. At $289, not a bad price. Im gona wait for Bass Pro Shops Fall Sale and pick one up then for the wife to shoot, and, the 7 year old to grow into.
