I am looking at either a marsh mouth or swamp bore hybrid. I want an open water call and something that I can get a little low on in case their coming in fast. Any feedback would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Well, for starters, you're kind of comparing apples and oranges. The Marsh Mouth is a LOUD call. It gets down and dirty but its top end (especially in acrylic) is definitely "comp call comparable." The Hybrid Swamp Bore is more of a timber call. Its top end is not even close to the MM and it gets way quieter. A better comparison would be the Marsh Mouth and Watkins' Original. The Original is much more comparable to the MM as it is a loud open water style call that can still get low.

Now, as far as which one to chose. I am not the one to answer that question. Brian Watkins and Tom Salter are my top two favorite call makers and I have calls from both AND have calls on order from both of them. I cannot choose between those two.

I will say, a Marsh Mouth and a Hybrid Swamp Bore would make a great COMBINATION but it is not an equal comparison to pick one or the other. Both are two of my favorite duck calls, and neither stick.

Thanks for the feedback. I wasn't aware that the swamp bore hybrid was a quiet call. I have never tried one and the only thing I can judge by is the sound file online which doesn't really allow you to guage how loud it is.

Yep, the Hybrid Swamp Bore is capable of a low-register ringing "hunting hail" and the Marsh Mouth, even the mellow Osage one I have, is capable of extreme volume on the top end and a high-pitched contest-like ring.

The hybrid is more of a "timber-mid-range" duck call while the MM is more of a screaming open water call that is capable of great range but will not get nearly as quiet as the HSB. They are two different beasts.

i havent seen this swamp bore hybrid yet how is it different than the swamp mouth all together?
Well for starters, they are made by two completely different call makers.

Brian Watkins makes the Swamp Bore Hybrid

Tom Salter makes the Swamp Mouth.

Your question is pretty broad, mind narrowing it down a little... what exactly do you want to know?

Mallard Mauler. I think the SM blown as soft as I can is about the same volume as the Mallard Mauler at about average blowing volume. The difference is the SM can keep going a long way and the Mallard Mauler tops out quick. I don't know how the Mallard Mauler compares to a lot of other timber calls I have not tried, but I have found it to be a nice little call.

Thanks for the comparison. Bernie Boyle makes a good duck call.

I will know soon enough. Shouldn't be much longer on my SM.

I ended up getting a Watkins original from someone here on the forum. I should get it by Tuesday. I was getting pretty serious about a T.Salt but I just can't afford a brand new acrylic call right now and I really am too hard on calls for non-stabilized wood.

From what I have read, the Watkins and T.salts are pretty comparible calls. I needed an open water call so I believe the Original fits the bill.

I may get a T. Salt swamp mouth or timber tamer some day to go with my Watkins Original

I would agree that the MM has more volume than the Watkins Original. The MM has more ring into it than the Watkins. To me the Watkins has a little more whiny nasal sound to it than the T.Salt.

Icelander was saying the T Salt MM has more volume than the Watkins original. What do you think Fowl_Wishes you have had them both?
I don't know if my Marsh Mouth is special or what but that baby absolutely SCREAMS. I shoulda known somethin when Tom told me and a few others that I had a "special" one.

Ponder this... the MM is in Osage and it will get very very very close to as loud as my acrylic Watkins COMP call! The COMP call I have from Brian Watkins is the loudest call I have blown to date and that includes several MVP's, Lares A5's, and a screamer of a SMM.

No joke, I am considering ear plugs for when my Jewel arrives!
