Maryland sportsmen educated their legislators about America's trapping heritage to ensure the defeat of an anti-trapping bill.

House Bill 372, introduced by Delegate Barbara Frush, D-Beltsville, would have banned all foothold trapping in the state and was opposed by Maryland sportsmen. On February 28, the Assembly Environmental Matters Committee reported the bill unfavorably to the Assembly by a vote of 11 to 9. One delegate was not present for the vote.

"The Environmental Matters Committee responded to messages it had received from sportsmen after the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance, Maryland Fur Trappers and Maryland Sportsmen's Association issued alerts regarding this legislation," said Tony Celebrezze, U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance director of state services. "The sportsmen explained to legislators that wildlife management, including trapping, should be left to professional biologists and based on sound science, not anti-hunting rhetoric."

Delegate Frush introduced similar anti-trapping bills in two previous legislative sessions, each failing thanks to sportsmen's actions.
