I and my 12 year old son have always wanted to kill Canada geese, but have had neither the time nor money to really do it. My father has a small farm close to Poinsett Lake in AR, and at the end of the afternoon a few will come over from the lake and light in his 2.5 acre pond.

We have had a hard freeze for a few days and almost all water is locked up in ice, including the pond (which is hip deep). When my son and I went squirrel hunting yesterday, we noticed wave after wave of Canadas flying over looking for open water.

We are thinking we may go out and cut a hole in the ice and shove the ice under, put out the 8 Canada floating dekes I have and a handfull of duck decoys for any stray ducks, and hide on the east side of the levy in the shade calling to them. While I am not a Canada goose hunter, I do have a call, and these are primarily resident birds that are not shot at or called at much if any. The only hitch in the giddyup is that it snowed last night. We have no white sheets in the house! I have thought about using some camo net and just hoping for the best.

I have the following 12 gauge shells to chose from:
Remington HD #4 and #6 in 3"
Remington HD #4 2 3/4"
Remington HD BB 3"
Federal Tungsten Iron BB 2 3/4"
Kent Fasteel #1 and #2 in 3"

Any help or tips you could give me would be appreciated.

I would go with the BB and/or the #1 shot. Hiding in the shade might work with a camo net. If you don't have white sheets...some cheap camo would be to go to Wally World (Walmarts) and get some oversized white Nurses Scrubs. Thats what we tell the guys that want to snow goose hunt with us to use as cheap camo and then could have them to use as camo for later on. Throw the scrubs on over your regular camo gear and cover up your face with a regular camo facemask.

We went out, chopped a big hole in the ice using an axe, put out decoys, pushed ice, hunkered down, and no geese at all came over. That is the story of my life! Tomorrow I will be bowhunting for my last deer.

I havent ever tried that but, I think it would work but cutting a whole in the ice. I have also heard that if you take a darker blue tarp and put it out. and kinda cover it a little. Ducks and geese will mistake it for open water. So I think if the ice doesnt work you could try that just put some dekes on it and try.
