I'm looking to get a 14' john boat, and was wondering if a 9.9hp is to small. I want to get something that will push 13 or 14 mph with me a dog and some decoys. Theres a big difference in cost for a 9.9 vs a 15 so yalls thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

Prior experience, we had a 1436 with a 15hp evinrude, older model, 2 stroke. With the older 15 I got 15-16 with a light hunting load, no dog. A newer 9.9 2 stroke might do what you want, if you're looking at something older or with a wider/heavier boat, go for the 15. Btw, a standard hunting load with a dog would've been about 150-200lbs heavier.

my jon boat has a 10hp honda on it and it moves it along real good. but it depends on your boat. mine is a flat bottum, i'd say go wiht a flat bottum too, becuase i think that a v hull would go slower. but my 10 pushes mine along real good. but if i were to do it again, i would get a 15 hp.

Jaker I have a 14ft john boat with 25hp four stroke. If you're hunting a non-tidal area I would think you would be ok with that set up. If you are hunting a area with a fairly strong tide I would go a little bigger motor. Good luck

I have a 1436 jon with a 15 2 stroke and it will push me 21 MPH with just me and fishing gear. It will push the boat 17-18 with 2 guys, dog and all duck hunting gear. I'm not sure if you'll get what you are looking for out of a 9.9 but if not, it should be close.
