The first question you need to ask yourself if you're going to train the dog in "American" or "British" style...or maybe a combination.

If you're going the British/non e-collar way, pick up Vic Barlow's "British Training for American Retrievers" or Robert Milner's "Back to Basics."

If going American, start with the 10 Minute Retriever...lots more as well...search threads on here.

To be honest, you're a behind the curve a if you don't know the basics of raising a gundog from being a pup. Don't take offense to that...just accept it and move on. The best thing you could do right now is immerse yourself in a local retriever club, books, and videos.

Your breeder should be able and willing to answer any questions.

Good luck!

remember to keep things fun and exciting. if you sound boring, the dog will think retrieving is boring.

the best thing i did was join a retrieving group. not only did i learn a ton, but i met great friends and hunting partners.

take care and have fun.

Congrats on the new pup!!! I would recommend Sound Beginnings DVD by Jackie Mertens to begin with....I must also ask what your goals are for your pup? I would also recommend The 10 Minute Retriver book or if going with a DVD I would choose Fowldawgs 1 DVD...
I offer member discounts on training material to DHC members so please feel free to PM or call me at 641 203-2867 if you would like to hear further detail on all of the training material available..I can lead you in the right direction..

Bonding , Obediance and Socialization are keys to start with and following a solid training program...

One quick question my pup is about 7 weeks now and yesterday he first started playing with squeaky toys and carrying them around then when i threw the toys he went and picked it up but it says when they do this your supposed to praise the heck out of em when they are young, but i did and i think i overpraised him because when i did that he would drop the toy do you recommend i don't praise him as much so he keeps the toy in his mouth??

THANKS for and replies all would be highly appreciated!!

basic obedience first ,once hes old enough to understand his name, then move on very slowly, but let him be a pup for 5 or 6month before you move on -not to fast,-dont push it to hard with the retrieving /water thing ,no frights ,it all takes a lot of time.good luck.

You aren't gonna teach the pup a thing about holding a bird in his mouth at 7 weeks, nor should you. You can't over-praise a pup. Denying praise because he drops something is almost like passive agressive correction. Get your arms around what a young pup needs over what you want him to do.
