I've never been able to hunt Xmas Eve so this year I wanted to make a point of spending the morning by myself, alone with nature and the ducks.

Let me begin by stating that I religiously watch the weather for days before and leading up-to the day/s I hunt. So the week of my Eve-hunt I checked the weather EVERYDAY! I knew that it was going to snow and maybe rain a little, but the 3 websites and news forecasts I watched all showed little precipitation. ie - 1-2 inches of snow throughout the day and rain ending by 5am. I'm not afraid of a little snow and rain when I'm hunting so I was more than a little thrilled at possible hunting with snow and noone around. I'm thinking all of Hackberry Flat to myself!!! Man was I in for a LOOOOONG day.

I arrived to my destination at 5am (still raining) and drove around looking for a parking spot when my truck slides off the road. This dirt road, now nothing but muddy sludge, was like driving on grease. Well I was stuck...by myself...with a 2w drive pickup. I called 411 and got a couple of phone numbers for tow trucks and one guy started heading out to me.

Roughly 630am, this guy calls me back and tells me that he is stuck too! Oh my luck is looking good today. So I call another guy. I keep in contact with this guy for nearly 2 hours, then he calls me and tells me he got stuck too!!!! OMG SERIOUSLY?!?! I'm freaking out now, thinking I'm never going to get home and I'm too far for anyone back home to come pick me up. This guy calls me back and tells me his buddy is heading out to pick me up. Around 10am guy #3 calls me and tells me he made halfway and had to turn around and get a bigger truck. At roughly 1130am my knight in shining armor showed up and tugged me out of the hole and I was on my way.

Think the story ends here? Not quite...

On a normal day, this trip would take me 50min - 1hr 15min drive, but today I didn't get home until nearly 8PM...thats 8 HOURS! God certainly was testing my patience that day. Not to mention humility and the intense embarrassment I felt when I was towed out. In the end I made it home in time for Xmas Eve family festivities, having not run off the road during my 8 cross-state drive.

Lesson learned - Don't believe Oklahoma weathermen/websites. When its going to get cold and wet, stay inside and catch up on sleep.

Now I invite all of you to rib me until you cry or get bored and learn from my stupidity. The things we do for hunt them duck-birds.

Wow, what a Christmas eve.

I was going to go out based on what the weather man said as well. Needless to say, that little voice in my head suggested I "stay home". Glad I did as I would have been out in the midst of it as well.

Glad you made it home.

How much was the tow?

Speck - The tow was FREE! Can you believe it?! Would have cost me $75 but the weather was so bad that they (towers) didn't want me getting stuck or flying off the road for a measly $75.

Duck - Watch it Bass! I remember when you had to be pulled out...and the weather wasn't even bad!!!! Some of us don't have the income for a fancy boat like you!!!

Man what a story! I pulled up to my little honey hole, was suprised to see two trucks there, when usually there are none at all, couple kids beat us there and it is first come first serve, They asked" Mr where do you plan on hunting?" I told them what blind I had planed on hunting while in the back of my mind there was this little voice saying, 'Chris are you up for that wade out to the blind'? With 35 mph winds out of the north and stronger winds expected , I said happly"go ahead fella's and get cha some"! My partner Chris was nice enough to invite us into his blind , I knew I made the right decision(staying right there, easy access to the truck) puttin out deeks the sleet started coming down HARd BROTHER! Arter getting in the blind and a stiff cup of java the first birds buzzed us right over our deeks.. they smoked us! They musta had the afterburners on man! We killed a couple mallards a teal then we left and Chris killed a big Bull Sprigg! So it wasn't that bad at all........ Your story sounds like a typical duck hunt i would have back home ! i hate that happened to ya bro! Being that Iam from S.C I have never experienced a duck season this productive before, and never have I hated ice so much!!I really dont mind it that much but I feel the ducks are wise to the little hole busted in the ice scenario,, with a dozen deeks froze up 20 minutes later! Went all the way to Kaw and the darn Arkansas River was even frozen!!!!!!Guys is this typical weather for OK winters?? I was here last winter and dont remeber the lows being this cold, I did not hunt because I was healing up from a terrible car accident! Just wish it would go away! I watched the WC earlier and they forecasted it to be somewhat warmer but the ice here around my neck of the woods is 3 to 4 inches thick. It's going to take some time for that stuff to melt. Good luck to all and to all HAPPY NEW YEAR!Maybe we'll get alittle warm air outa the south and melt some of this stuff!

That sucks, but a positive is that you got home that day. They were shutting down the interstates around OKCity. Would suck to spend Christmas Eve/Morning in a truck by yourself.

I hunted around Stilly Christmas Eve, but I left around 9:00 am because I had to drive to Edmond. I timed it perfectly, I checked weather.com before going out that morning and I knew I needed to be home by 11:00 am. When I left Stilly, there was no precip, when I got to Edmond, it was that intense sleet. That morning I said, "If we get 8 inches of snow, I'll eat my hat." I think we ended up getting 14".

No I prolly wont call ya, you will be too fancy for my blood by then. And by the way, the ducks at "Eufala" are gone.
You won't have to call me! I don't forget where I came from or who brought to this addiction. Sucks to hear about Eufala! We need our secret weapon duck caller, Donkroy to call em back..."HEY DUCK!"
