I've never been able to hunt Xmas Eve so this year I wanted to make a point of spending the morning by myself, alone with nature and the ducks.
Let me begin by stating that I religiously watch the weather for days before and leading up-to the day/s I hunt. So the week of my Eve-hunt I checked the weather EVERYDAY! I knew that it was going to snow and maybe rain a little, but the 3 websites and news forecasts I watched all showed little precipitation. ie - 1-2 inches of snow throughout the day and rain ending by 5am. I'm not afraid of a little snow and rain when I'm hunting so I was more than a little thrilled at possible hunting with snow and noone around. I'm thinking all of Hackberry Flat to myself!!! Man was I in for a LOOOOONG day.
I arrived to my destination at 5am (still raining) and drove around looking for a parking spot when my truck slides off the road. This dirt road, now nothing but muddy sludge, was like driving on grease. Well I was stuck...by myself...with a 2w drive pickup. I called 411 and got a couple of phone numbers for tow trucks and one guy started heading out to me.
Roughly 630am, this guy calls me back and tells me that he is stuck too!
Oh my luck is looking good today. So I call another guy. I keep in contact with this guy for nearly 2 hours, then he calls me and tells me he got stuck too!!!! OMG SERIOUSLY?!?! I'm freaking out now, thinking I'm never going to get home and I'm too far for anyone back home to come pick me up. This guy calls me back and tells me his buddy is heading out to pick me up. Around 10am guy #3 calls me and tells me he made halfway and had to turn around and get a bigger truck. At roughly 1130am my knight in shining armor showed up and tugged me out of the hole and I was on my way.
Think the story ends here? Not quite...
On a normal day, this trip would take me 50min - 1hr 15min drive, but today I didn't get home until nearly 8PM...thats 8 HOURS! God certainly was testing my patience that day. Not to mention humility and the intense embarrassment I felt when I was towed out. In the end I made it home in time for Xmas Eve family festivities, having not run off the road during my 8 cross-state drive.
Lesson learned - Don't believe Oklahoma weathermen/websites. When its going to get cold and wet, stay inside and catch up on sleep.
Now I invite all of you to rib me until you cry or get bored and learn from my stupidity. The things we do for hunt them duck-birds.
