I'm looking for advice to get on the right track calling.
I hunted this past season, but I'm a total noob to ducks.

Got any tips on how to start calling successfully in the field?

Pick up Carlson Championship Call's "Pro Duck Calling" DVD and study it like there's no tomorrow... then when tomorrow comes, study it like there is no day after that... get what I'm saying.

That is by far and away the best learning media ever created for duck callers. Nothing better. Practice, study, practice, practice...

Not just any call will work with the Carlson System... I highly suggest if you go that route to pick up a molded Carlson Equilizer duck call to go with it... affordable and awesome. I think its only $45 as a package? I wish I would have started on it.

Aww shucks guys.... I finally said sumthin right?

*Meanwhile, back at the Duck Cave*

I just got off of the phone with Jim James of Carlson Championship Calls... he's a really good guy and a WEALTH of information to say the least. Give him a call if you have any questions about the Carlson system. IMO, Jim James is the most talented and skilled duck call operator in the world. Many loose focus on the musical aspect of calling ducks. A duck call is an instrument and should be played accordingly. Jim is capable of some amazing things on a duck call. Not to mention the '96 World Champion...

If you run into problems with the physical aspect of your air control get Phil Robertson's "The art of commanding ducks" video. I got it for my brother a few years back and was amazed. Phil has the ability to put into words exactly what you do with your chest, diaphragm and mouth to properly blow a call...something that can be difficult to explain to a novice.

Plus he teaches duck calling and not competition calling. The fundamentals are the same but application is a whole different ball game.

I believe so, the Lares calls are capable of a low register ring with the right reed length and that is the important factor.

Sam,

Look forward to learning more about the low register ring when I get the DVD! I think Im gunna go buy a capilar and some mylar. Right now Im runnin the 1.330 with dog ears actually. Seems like I can 'do the most' on that length and Im loving the sound.

In my package I told him I needed volume for hunting corn field mallards I got 1.300, 1.310 strait. AS well as 1.335 dog eared. Ill prolly shoot you a PM over on the FUGE when I get into my reed cutting projects.
