Well what are your wants and needs? the must have list so to speak......

mud motors have only two down sides. one is speed, the typical mud motor tops out at about 26mph give or take on hull design and load. the other is noise, they are a bit loud.

if you have to run 40mph+ to some far away place then forget the mud motor and get a outboard.

If you need to make long drives then get a boat with side console steering.

I know bout the speed that dont matter much. The marsh i fish in gets shallow quick, last year i had my outboard and ran it fine but had alot of slow time in their due to the mud. Its just hard to make the diss. o

Remember the 80 / 20 rule (speaking from experience here). A rig is never going to be ideal for everything you do, so pick what you do 80% of the time and buy a rig for that.

I have run mud motors for six years but I don't fish and I don't need the speed that a big outboard will give you when you have a lot of area to cover fast. I bought a very nice modified V hull once to hang a mud motor on. It tracked very well and was a really dry ride in the big water but it absolutely did not get it done in the shallow stuff. I forgot the 80 / 20 rule and bought a boat for the very few times I would be on big, angry water. Mistake.

If you fish that shallow area a lot you can get a jackplate for your outboard or you can even go remote steer console mud motor. You have a few options.

Up here we use our shallow water rigs (mostly Phowler Boats with PD Shallow Water Outboards) year round, we hunt, fish and just goof around all year with the same boats. If you don't mind running around with the speeds of a 25-30 outboard, then a 36 PD will work just fine. As HH said, there is no "perfect" rig, but we have found that a well laid out rig with some nice options for both hunting and fishing can be a great year round rig.

PS we tub, knee board and waterski behind my 2060 Dual PD rig, its pretty cool.
