I would love to hear some ideas on areas to go in October and early November here in AK. I'm new to this waterfowling gig, but the last 4 days of jump shooting mallards on the Placer river has got me hooked.

I've always been an avid big game hunter and the rest of September (except for the evenings after work where the pup and I can be found trying to find birds) is pretty much reserved for moose hunting. Now that the family pup seems to be hooked on waterfowl as well, I need something to extend the hunting season.

I know absolutely squat about geese and little about ducks and have basically been hunting them as I would grouse - just in or near the water. If someone would please take a moment and throw some pointers and ideas my way I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks - Brett

welcome brett :welcome:
I don't know much about hunting up north (I live in juneau) I can tell you that for later in the year you will want a very good duck hunting jacket. also ducks up here decoy well so you should probaly buy a dozen or so mallard dekoys (green head gear a.k.a ghg are cheap and look great) also look around Fish & game might have some hunting clinics around also go to a sporting good store and ask for help on location.
word of caution - most likely you'll hunt in a tidal area so you should watch the tides very carefully ALWAYS have a plan and tell some one when you plan to be back. your number one goal when hunting should be to come back alive.
good luck hunting the greatest state in the Union

AkBret...

I actually live in Peters Creek (outside Eagle River).

How old are ya? Cuz Myself and "DuffMaN" (my best friend) are planin on a few hunts in October too.

We mostly go to "Rabbit Slough" right outside of Wasilla. And Im sure we would love to see you there

Do you have a boat? If you do, that will come in handy as it is hard to find a "Good" walk out place.

If you have MSN Messenger add me: [email protected]

Please, stick around DHC. Git to know us, and y'll be addicted to this place too

AK Ducks - Thanks for the tips

Stouff - I'm 30, and Loki the mini-lab is 1 and has 3 ducks to his credit so far. I live in S. Anchorage but, I grew up in Eagle River and went to CHS. I'd love to try and hunt the hay flats or Goose Bay but, I don't know where to go. As for the boat, I have a canoe and access to a 18' Lowe w/ 40hp jet on it (It's my old man's) the motor needs a little TLC and the hull is nothing to write home about but it sure works well for Kings on the lower Little Sue. Hope to hear more from you, and I added you to msn messenger - [email protected] - It's a fly pattern and greenbuttskunk was already taken.
