Hey i was wondering if anyone has had a bluetick coonhound and if they are good hunting dogs and if they are hard to train. ive looked up information on them and i dont really know if they are good for duck and all kinds of hunting.

any other ideas for dogs that dont shed very bad will be apreciated

My uncle used to have one. It wasn't a GREAT hunting dog or anything, but it would fetch the ducks out of the water.

lab the best dog there is EVER!!! Its friendly to everyone, it wouldnt know what to do with itself if it couldnt retireve ducks, can flush any upland game bird u want, hardy, long lasting dog. ohhh and did i mention it can take really cold weather real well. Trust me u wont be disappointed with a labrador retriever sitting next to you in the duck blind, truck or where ever u want him/her.

If you wanna **** hunt buy a blue tick or another **** hunting breed. If you primarily duck hunt get a lab or a chessie. If you wanna hunt fur and feathers, and even do some big game tracking, get a versatile breed like the shorthair, wirehair, or some of the other versatiles.

BLAH labs are overrated! My chessie is all business, no play. I get annoyed by the labs that won't leave you alone.

i dont think that labs are overrated sure they are spoken highly of but still i had a lab when i was younger and i loved him more than anything but we moved and got rid of him and they shed and i dont what a dog that sheds at least not massivly

What's the deal with the shedding? That seems to be a major point here so if you are set on getting a dog that dosen't shed much there are only a few (bird dogs) I can think of. American Water Spaniels, Irish Water Spaniels, Boykins similar I think to the American Water Spaniel and Poodles ( the standards were origianlly great hunting dogs). I'm probably missing one but those are the majors and great hunters all, even the poodle if you can find the right one.

notice I have a lab in my sig. I just like to give guys a hard time when they think that labs are the only dogs that will hunt ducks. Ask fishnranger, he hunts with me, don't count out the chessies!

the deal with the shedding is i live with my parents because im only 15 and my mom refuses to clean all the hair up so if there is a lab out there that doesnt shed im on it but untill then the dog cant shed i have no choice
if it were up to me id get a lab my dad wants one but not the mother

I'd think about a gsp or a wirehair, I don't think they shed too much, maybe you can find a good hybred like a poodlepointer or something like that for cheaper though, a shorthaired bird dog mixed with a lab, you see them all the time for cheap or free. labs are not the greatest dog's ever, by far, they are the most overbred dogs ever. everybody I know has a lab and when we go hunting we always take my chessy. not their labs.

Since you're from Wisconsin I don't think a shorthaired dog should be in your option list. I know some shorthaired dogs will hit ice cold water like a chessie, but there are many others that won't. Get a dog that is known to be able to handle cold water, because I know you get it up there in Wisconsin. I watch some Packers games.

yea the water is cold most of the time even in the summer so im thinking of a lab my mom says that i have clean up after it but i dont think thats much of a problem

Theres a reason u see them all the time for free or cheap cuz they are worthless in the field. The have niether a good point or a strong retrieve. Stay away from a mix.

A GSP will not be able to take the cold most of those dogs are shivering cold after 15 mins of sitting still in 30°-35°. Go with a GWHP if u want a pointer/retriever. Caution: When out hunting ive seen one drown, if this is the route ur going get a float vest. As far as shedding i dont think that they shed that much.

Ill admit chessies are probably better duck dogs, but who couldnt fall in love with a lab? besides if lab werent all playful u'd think something was wrong with it.

All in all every dog sheds, just tell them to get use it.

1. GSP - Best Upland Dog
2. GWHP - A Little Bit Of Both (it will have a strong retrieve or a stong point, but does both)
3. Lab - Most Friendly, All It Wants Is To Please (This is prolly your best bet)
4. Chessie - Strong Hunter, Can Take Anything (These dogs are not small, they are larger then a lab)
