Hello Everyone,

I am 60 and have been hunting since I was 15. I have done a fair amount of jump shooting and have a 1 1/2 year old lab with hunting blood.

I have wanted to decoy ducks since watching The American Sportsman every Sunday morning as a child. From what I am reading and scouting, this is the worst time in history to begin the sport in Western PA. However, I am not spoiled by the "old days" because I haven't experienced them.

I scouted Presque Isle a month ago and yesterday mustered the courage to put out a spread. As a beginner, I only had a half dozen AvianX Redheads and 2 hen with a drake Goldeneye by Tanglefree. I set up on a weedbed with my decoys 20 yds. out in 2 1/2-3 ft of water.

CONDITIONS WERE HEAVY FOG - visibility les than 80 yds. When I pulled my decoys at ten, I noticed that one of the Goldeneye decoys had a little curl of monofilament anchor line above water. The three groups of divers that I saw were, a pair then a foursome of large ducks (Scaup? But the foursome looked BIG.) followed by a small flock of Buffleheads.

MY QUESTION: In your opinion, did I attract then flare these ducks with my little faulty layout or was I just lucky to see these ducks momentarily in the fog?

I also had a flock of about a dozen divers cross the highway on my way home around I-80 at dusk

Thank You So Much,
Andy

p.s. It took a lot of time and effort for me to become a good deer hunter and Steelhead/Salmon fisherman. I understand that this will be the same. I really enjoyed my hunt at Presque Isle, especially hearing the calls and seeing something other than Mallards and Geese. But I plan on becoming good enough to pull the trigger at least once or twice a day. :) Hee hee, we shall see.

In my opinion, I strongly believe that small details do matter. I believe that a more realistic spread will attract and hold a birds attention far better than a spread that has small faults. If their attention is on the dekes and when they are circling and checking out the spread, if they spot something that does not seem normal then they will flare. I use mainly longlines with my decoys and once I hunted all day with the mainline draped over the head of one of the decoys. I never spotted it until I was packing up but we sure flared some birds that day and I believe it to be that small detail. That is just my opinion of course as some people get birds to decoy to painted bleach bottles so maybe I think too much lol.

Thanks, jkachmar248,

I know birds' eyes are excellent and I think that often we as a people underestimate the abilities (senses/intelligence) of animals. I cancelled a trip I had planned today so that I can put the finishing touches on a ghillie cover for my boat.

Besides the loop of exposed mono the flat water/lack of motion may have been an issue. My trip in two days will have some wind.

I got six Canvasbacks to add to my spread and a decoy bag to keep everything clean and organized.

To anyone trying these specialized sports alone: NEVER GIVE UP!!! Some of the old pros are really cool, such as jkachmar248. Others, not so much. BUT, even the guys who are unfriendly are not invisible, study them. You can learn from them by watching (location, location, location/presentation, presentation, presentation). Many men have fished next to me for Steelhead and obviously wanted every fish to themselves. If you want payback, become good or GREAT!!! Also, there are many duck hunting videos on line. This is a great resource. Watch a few each day and pay attention.

I will post after my next outing. Today is the edge of a storm. Tomorrow is the storm. The day after that we shall see.

Thank You So Much,
Andy :)
